My dad and mom are 83 years and 77 years respectively. Last year Dad had a severe stroke that did not paralyze his body but took his mind instead. I moved back to my parents place last August to help Mom take care of Dad. Since then we have been able to take care of him reasonably well even though VA benefits were denied because we were not spending more than their income to take care of him. Yes, I know, it doesn't make sense to us either but that is the reason we were given by the VA rep for the denial of benefits. (Dad is a veteran of the US Air Force, active duty of three years during the Korean conflict.) About two months or so ago Mom started having severe pain in her hips, low back and upper legs, which has made it near impossible for her to do anything more than relax take care of herself. And, unfortunately, I am disabled to the point that I am unable to adequately assist in getting Dad showered/bathed adequately on a regular basis.
Well, enough of the sob story but I thought you may like a little bit of background before I presented this request. Due to the disabilities of my parents it is difficult at best, and actually unsafe for them to get into and out of the bathtub because of the rather high sides. Our goal is to raise enough money to pay for a complete bathroom makeover with a walk-in shower, so that it will be safer and easier for them to clean up adequately on a regular basis.
The cost for this makeover will be in the neighborhood of $7,000. (I have included a screenshot of the proposal sent to us by one of the contractors we had bid this project.) This is with us providing the vanity, sink and medicine cabinet. We currently have about $1,500 saved toward this project but need it done as soon as possible for their safety, and it would take about another two years to save up enough to pay for the project outright.
My intent is to raise enough funds by July 15, 2013, to pay for this makeover outright. I am asking for donations to help me raise $5,500.00 toward this end. Any donations above and beyond that goal will be used to purchase Ensure® for Dad, as that is all he consumes other than the occasional bottle of water, as well as be returned to this community through donations to help others fulfill their needs.

If twenty-five people donate $100.00 each, one hundred people donate $25.00 each, and fifty people donate $10.00 each, then we will reach our goal within just a few days. Please consider helping my parents to be safe in their own bathroom.
