SUHPS America Races Trip

We are THE SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY HUMAN POWERED SUBMARINE SOCIETY

We were founded in 2014 by engineering student Adam Studebaker, who wanted to '' demonstrate our university's engineering around the world while giving students an opportunity to network and gain real-world experience solving tough engineering problems''.  Our first competition was at the 2015 International Submarine Races in America with the UoSS Orca (University Of Southampton Ship) and we returned two years later with the UoSS Kaiju in 2017.

Today we are made up of 25 students, both undergraduates, and postgraduates, studying subjects including engineering, maths, biology, marine biology, oceanography and medicine. What we all have in common is a passion for problem-solving, and a determination to win!

GET YOUR NAME ON OUR SUBMARINE!

We would love to get as many of your names onto our submarine as possible to help us get to the next International Submarine Races.

For a donation of just £5, we will put your name on our submarine!

T&C’s

Minimum donation £5 made here on our Go Fund Me page.

The name format used on the submarine will be first name initial followed by surname e.g. J Smith.

If you have already donated, your name will be added to the submarine.

If you do not want your name on our submarine, but would still like to donate, an anonymous donation is still greatly appreciated.

WHAT IS A HUMAN POWERED SUBMARINE?

A human-powered submarine is a wet submarine powered completely by 1 or 2 divers. In general, the pilots power the submarine using pedal power,  like you would on a bike. The pilots can steer the submarine using a variety of methods but the most popular one is using a rudder, like in a boat. A similar system is used to control the submarine's depth except while for steering the rudder is vertical, for depth the fins/dive planes would be horizontal.

The international races, held in alternating years in Europe and America, were created to encourage young people to fill the shortfall in marine engineering. Each team builds a unique wet submarine from scratch, and their pilot propels it using only human power over an underwater course. The pilot's breath from a SCUBA tank held within the submarine.

£40 allows us to rent dive equipment for one support diver for one day.
£120 is the price of the 2:1 bevel gears to drive the propeller.
£300 allows us to rent the university pool for a testing session.

As you can see, every little helps!!!
