Silverton High School to D.C.

Donation protected
We are students in the snowy mountain town of Silverton, CO.  Our town is super small: 500 people total, with more in the summer, much less in the winter. There are 70 students in our school total, K-12. We're very isolated, as not many people want to move to a town at 9318 feet above sea level.  Travel is pretty difficult, as our town is bordered with fairly dangerous mountain passes, especially in the wintertime. In order to get to the nearest town, which is 50 miles away, people brave these passes every day.

Silverton Public School is all about adventure. From the time you are in kindergarten in Silverton, you already begin your adventurous traveling career as an Expeditionary Learner. In every grade you have a different study, or expedition, and you go on an amazing, even life-changing, trip across the country. Traveling is one of the most beneficial things students can do in school, especially since we're so isolated. After a year of studying in a classroom, tying everything together and solidifying the learning with a trip is extremely beneficial to a student's education. We have had so many great adventures together, and the high school is very excited for our next destination (with your help): Washington, D.C.

This year the high school is studying U.S. Government and Civics. We base our expeditions on guiding questions. These are the big questions we ask throughout the year and answer during our fieldwork. These questions are: How are people empowered or excluded from power? How can democracy protect individual/minority rights, yet have majority rule? Does democracy ensure justice? and finally, What does it mean to be a citizen? We are planning a trip to Washington D.C. to see the Capitol, the Smithsonian, and meet with experts in law, journalism, and immunology.

We're so close to our original goal of $12,000; all we need is $2,000 more to have enough to cover flights, food, museums, and tour expenses. Housing expenses are covered, thanks to a friendly local Silverton and D.C. couple who are allowing our entire high school to stay with them.  We're extremely grateful to them, and to the people helping us raise the money we need to go on this trip.  So, thank you. Thank you for your shares, your support, and of course, your donations.  We appreciate every single part of it.
