SARI Researcher Memorial Fund

We work with the Tanzania Soil Information Service based out of the Selian Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) in Arusha. Our main goal is to help improve agriculture and food security in Tanzania.

While on a routine scientific soil survey in the Chamwino District of central Tanzania, three of our colleagues, Mrs. Teresi Nguma, Mr. Nicas Magazine and Mr. Faraji Mafuru (left to right in the picture) were brutally murdered by villagers on October 1st, 2016 (see the news report here ).

Mrs. Nguma leaves behind two young children, who are now orphans. Mr. Magazine leaves behind his wife and five young children. Mr. Mafuru leaves behind his girlfriend and two young children. In each case the victims were the sole breadwinners for their families.

This tragic incident has left everyone at SARI and in the international soil science community in deep shock. Such incidents are so unprecedented in Tanzania, that this one is almost beyond belief. The talented and highly experienced team was on a humanitarian and scientific mission and we assume that the village was driven by a case of mistaken identity (see the news report here ). The police are still investigating the exact causes of the incident and 45 suspects have been arrested.

We would be extremely grateful for any support whatsoever that you might be able to provide. All the money raised by this campaign would go directly to support the families financially and to enable the children to remain in school. School fees are a major family expense in Tanzania.

With many thanks and best wishes to you on behalf of the Nguma, Magazine and Mafuru families and SARI.
