Rochester NY Deaf Softball

My name is Philip Miller, an avid baseball/softball player with more than 30 years of experience dating back to when I was in my mother's womb. Yes, all that time my mother, our friends and family thought I was kicking, it was really me practicing my swing using the umbilical cord!

Since I moved to Rochester, NY back in 1995, I have been very involved with the Rochester, NY deaf athletic community especially in slow pitch softball.

I participated in local leagues, tournaments with both hearing and deaf men/coed teams and it has been a honor to play among so many wonderful athletes with the same passion for the sport.

My opinion, this sport is a tricky sport where one common challenge is we all play for bragging rights as opposed to other sports that could bring in a return on investment. For example bowlers could rank top 10 and earn funds toward their recognition while in softball we would play our hearts out and most common would be granted a trophy to recognize the team's efforts.

Our local ball players have participated in local leagues for all divisions including men's/women's/coed. In all divisions we have shown our competition that we can play on any level we put our hearts to. We have played at Henrietta park, Cobbs Hill park, Chili park, McAvoy park, East Rochester, Webster's Kent park, and many other places. By playing local, it allowed many of us to bring our passion outside of our leagues to participate in tournaments and there, we have had opportunities to earn high honors such as All-Stars and members of Champion teams. For instance our most recent accomplishments at NSAD (www.nsad.org) level was Co-ed Championships at NSAD in Las Vegas 2012 and Women Championships at NSAD in Texas 2011. Both trips to NSAD had men and women recognized as All Star members. On top of that our men and coed teams won several local league championships.

2013 season as far as I know, we aim to run spring/summer starting late March with men's teams on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday (double header league). Women's team would play on Wednesday nights. Coed teams would play on Friday and Sunday nights. Then will continue into the fall, end of October hopefully on the same days.

This page has been set up as an effort to fund raise money to continue our traditions within our community to participate in local leagues and tournaments. League fees vary from $500 to $700 per night. Tournaments fees could range between $250 to $300 each tournament. The money we raise here will help pay for leagues, tournaments. If we raise enough we could also get uniforms as well.

With everyone's help we aim to continue to promote slow pitch softball in the Rochester, NY Deaf community.

Many thanks in advance!
