What is Rise Above?
Rise Above is a mentoring and tutoring organization for at-risk teens in Jackson County. We serve high school students who have been suspended or permanently expelled from school and teens residing at the Jackson County Youth Center.
One of the most important components of Rise Above is the relationships built with students. Our goal is to assist the teens in understanding the importance of the relationships and networks people build. In our personal, academic, and professional lives, relationships play a vital role in creating long-lasting positive outcomes.
Our Programs
Reading Aloud — A reading and phonics program (Orton Gillingham) which is geared toward students that are currently a grade level or more behind in their reading.
Cross Roads - A program at Rise Above designed for high school students who have been suspended or expelled from school. Students are given the opportunity to stay current on their schoolwork, either by completing assignments from their regular teachers during a suspension or engaging in an online program when expelled. Rise Above does not replace public schools. The goal is always to return students to their schools prepared to be successful.
Success is Building — An entrepreneurial program that allows our students to gain experience and knowledge in how to start a for-profit business. Part of this program has student actually start a small business.
How does it work?
Cross Roads is a FREE program. Students are placed in small classes (8-10 students) with a teacher. There they complete the work assigned to them by their school. Counseling services and life skills classes are also a part of Rise Above’s curriculum.
When is it?
Monday-Friday 9:00am-2:30pm
Voluntary faith-based after school programming is available until 3:30.
