RANGER Walker walk for Veterans '18

$1,379 of $4,500 goal

Raised by 25 people in 12 months
I am now officially retired from the US Army and back at it this year attempting to match last year’s goal and raise $4500 for Veterans as I walk the Camino Portuguese, 238 miles over 12 days, from Porto, Portugal through Santiago de Campostela  to Muxia, Spain, the other end of the world.            Last year in 2017, we raised $4520 for veterans as I walked the French Way, 534 miles over 34 days from St. Jean de Pied de Port, France, through Santiago de Campostela, to Finisterre, Spain. (Link to last year’s walk is below and has all blogs and pictures) This route was made popular by the Movie called, "The Way" starring Martin Sheen. Thank you all for your donations and support! The journey was life changing, and more importantly, we helped many Veterans.       The old saying was all roads in Europe lead to Santiago de Campostela, the Way of St. James.  The Camino Portuguese, the Portuguese Way, is the second most traveled Camino pilgrimage route on the way to the cathedral in Santiago de Campostela where St. James is buried. After walking the most traveled route last year, it is only natural to continue the fund raising with the next route.       This trip will start on Sunday 22 April in Porto, Portugal, walk 8 days to Santiago de Campostela, and then 4 more days to Muxia, Spain ending on 3 May. I am personally funding my entire trip and 100% of donations received will go to Veterans organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Wounded Warrior Project. I will blog my entire trip on Facebook and this site. Please consider sponsoring the walk at ten cents per mile or $25.00. Anything helps; a $5 or $10 donation is greatly appreciated.       You have a choice what to do with your hard-earned money. Please consider donating to a guy that will complete a grueling approximate 20-mile hike a day for 12 days to raise money for the former protectors of your freedom, the US Veteran. There is no finer cause and YOU can be part of this journey and adventure!      Thank you, Godspeed, and Ride the Ride, Live the Legend.   Chad

Hello and I am now back to Hawaii after a 220 mile walk over 12 days. It was a pleasure to walk for Veterans.

Thank you to all that donated as we raised $1,500 that will be donated to Veterans. Though short of the goal, this money will make a difference.

As you probably have heard the Big Island of Hawaii is in a crisis with the volcano that is erupting and several hundreds of families have been affected to include many Veterans. There is still time to donate if you still want to help. I will close out the go fund me account next Monday and document my donation.

Thank you again for your support.

Ride the Ride, Live the Legend.

D+11 - Day 12 and made it to Finisterre, the end of the world, 216 miles. Today was a beautiful day and walked by the water most of the way. The name comes from fini or finish and terra or earth.... finished earth. This was the most western part of the world when the earth was thought to be flat. We now know different. This completes my journey and walk. On Monday I return to work and routine but so thankful of the opportunity to walk for Veterans. You too can make a difference.

Thank you for all the support raising money for Veterans. I will continue to take donations for one more week. Please share this post with friends and family. Every donation makes a difference.

Ride the Ride, Live the Legend!

D+10 - For the trip, you pack for the worst case scenario and bring extra equipment for a "just in case" moment. Today was that moment. Day 11 on the walk it was 38 F outside and raining hard all day long. I made it about 14 miles of pure misary before stopping for the day and finding an Alberque to get warm and dry. I was soaked and looked like I had been swimming in full clothes. There is not a more humbling experience than being wet and cold to make you realisee you are a mere mortal in a world you do not have any control over. You resort back to Maslow's hiarchy of needs when shelter becomes more important than anything else. So in stoping early and finding shelter, I did not make it to Finisterre yesterday but will make the short walk tomorrow. Based on this delay I will not continue to Muxia but have been reminded of an important lesson, I am not always in control of my destiny and need help at times. The inn keeper was my hero yeaterday providing me the basic needs I so critically needed, shelter.

We have raised about $1500 for Veterans and though short of my goal and I am proud of the support. I am making one more final plea for donations. Please donate to support Veteran's to give them some help when they find themselves in need.

D+9 - Walking for ten days now and covered 20 miles yesterday or 32km. Total is 313km or around 193 miles. There is about 40km to go to Finisterre and that will be split up to two days to enjoy the scenery and area. Today walking was lovely through rolling hills and farmland. We continually went up and down in elevation. From Santiago the elevation was 250ft above sea level and we climbed to 750ft through the day ending at 450ft yesterday. Today we climbed to a max 1500ft above sea level and then down to 1200ft to end the day. Tomorrow we will go back up to 1480ft and then rapidly down to 0ft to seallevel. Though you get tired of up and down, it is so beautiful. Attached is a picture from the highest point today.

More tomorrow, Ride the Ride, Live the Legend.
