60-70% OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND HISPANIC KIDS CAN'T SWIM!
A recent study commissioned by the USA Swimming Foundation and conducted by the University of Memphis found that nearly 70% of African American children and nearly 60% of Hispanic children have low or no swim ability, compared to 40% of Caucasians, putting them at risk for drowning.
-Participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children aged one to four years. (Source: Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine 2009)
-African-American children drown at a rate nearly three times higher than their Caucasian peers. (Source: CDC)
-If a parent does not know how to swim, there is only a 13 percent chance that a child in that household will learn how to swim. (Source: National research study by the USA Swimming Foundation and the University of Memphis)

Here at Proviso East High School, which is 48.4% black and 48.4% Hispanic, we are partnering up with the West Cook YMCA to pilot our first Life Guarding class. The students will then have the opportunity to serve as Life Guards during PE classes as well as become employable citizens within the community. Our pool will also give community members a chance to purchase a reduced swim pass to prepare for the upcoming swim season.
Currently Proviso East High School as well as Proviso Partners For Health have jump started the program by funding part of the needed up to date equipment. We are now fundraising to help purchase the last of our needed equipment/supplies FOR THE STUDENTS. That is why we are asking for YOUR help. Each student needs a suit, goggles and cap. We also need additional pool supplies, such as rescue boards, CPR manikins and AED training pads. We look forward to your help as our students make a BIG SPLASH!
