No Portal Left Behind

Cats are scared when they enter shelters, and cramming them in a space that is too small on the best of days only makes matters worse. They are forced to lie right beside their litter pan with no room to stretch out. Can you imagine if you were locked in an outhouse and didn't know why? You have no control and you're scared. It's stressful. Stress brings about all sorts of illness. When a cat gets sick in a shelter, it increases the likelihood that she will be euthanized.

Not surprisingly, giving cats enough room to turn around and stretch keeps them healthier and happier while they wait for their new home. A few extra inches of floor space can mean the world to them.  You can give them that by adding a portal, a plastic pass-through with a door that is placed between two small cages to double the space a cat gets in a shelter. It's still not home but it's OH so much better while they wait for their forever adopter to arrive.  Just look at that stretch!

On February 7th, I paid forward the $10,000 award I received from being named a Maddie's Hero to a special fund that would allow shelters that want to portalize but can't afford the upfront costs to take the plunge.

I've seen the proof hundreds of times over-- portals pay for themselves by decreasing medical and, frankly, euthanasia costs.

But that doesn't change the fact that some shelters don't have the money to spend, even if they'll recoup the costs down the road.  At some point in our lives, who among us couldn't use a little helping hand to get our ball rolling?  My hope is that the recipients of the portals will Portal It Forward later on in life.

The drawing was originally scheduled for March 7.  But here's the thing-- although I've long dreamed of starting something like this, I've been dreading today.  You guys, the submissions for these portals have been among the most beautiful things I've seen in over 30 years of helping animals in shelters.

Shelter caregivers begging for portals their shelter can't afford just so they can provide better care and give each cat a fighting chance.

I can't bear the thought of saying no to a single one of them. They deserve it, the animals deserve it, and we, a community of animal lovers, together can do something about it.

Stainless steel cages last practically forever. One portal will forever change the experience of every single cat that stays in that cage for as long as that shelter is in operation.

You can make that happen. You can be the person to tell that shelter worker, "I see you. I respect what you are doing for animals, I support you, and I thank you."  What gift can you give that will have that sort of lasting impact?

I am delaying the drawing one week in the hopes of telling you my story will inspire you to help me give a portal to every single shelter  worker who asked for one. Please help me say YES.

I only need 303.36 people to donate $25 each to make next Friday they day we tell shelters we are happy to provide the tools they need to save more lives.

Hey all, just wanted to make sure if you wanted to, you saw the video of the final happy drawing where we broke the news that ALL THE SHELTERS WON!!! YEAH!!!! I highly recommend if you watch this, speed it up to at least 2X. There's a lot of winners and it's way better on double time! And it meant a ton to every winner - as Louisa County Animal Shelter posted to their facebook page, "And even though I knew we raised enough to portal everyone who entered, well guess what? I still cried hearing us announced!"

Y'all did so much with your support. You gave hope where it was badly needed. Thanks again and again!

Hello and happy Friday to all you amazing supporters of the Portal it Forward/No Portal Left Behind Campaign! We were hoping to post the final drawing today but technical issues have forced us to defer that slightly - stay tuned. It's gonna be good! Meanwhile, I have some AMAZING numbers to share that I hope will bring a huge smile to your faces this Friday afternoon. We've done the final portal math and between the Maddie's Hero Award that kicked this thing off, your support, a few behind-the-scenes donors, and generous grants from the ASPCA that will directly fund portals for 3 of the contestants, we will be able to provide (drumroll please) a total of 697 portals to 39 shelters!!!!!! That was so fun to type I'm going to type it again! 697!!!!!!! That is even more than we were aiming for when we started this campaign, and believe me every single one of those portals is desperately needed and will be deeply appreciated. In fact, let's just think about the math on this a bit more. A stainless steel cage with a portal in it will easily last another 10 years. Let's say that in a year, about 30 cats will pass through an average shelter cage. That means our little campaign will impact at least 254,405 cats (that's 697 x 10 x 30 for those of you following along with your calculators). More than a quarter million! For some of those cats, the portal will literally mean the difference between life and death. For every one of those cats, the portal will make all the difference for every minute she is in confinement. In fact, if we assume that shelter cats will be in those cages about 23 hours a day (with one hour on the lap of a friendly volunteer or staff member, we hope) that adds up to 3,663,432,000 minutes of portalized happiness we'll be passing out when we do the drawing next week! It's not every day that we get to count our impact by the billions, is it?
And if you're not sure how much a minute matters, I invite you to take a look at this photo from one of the contestants of just one cat in their shelter. Set your timer for a minute and just take it in. Then imagine what a difference it would make for that sweet little black and white cat to have just a little more room <3.
We can't wait to see the "after " pic!
