Hazel's Surgery Fund!

Donation protected
The moment I first saw Hazel I fell in love with her. I was visiting the Agoura Hills Animal Shelter and there she was! She had been picked up as a stray and no one claimed her. I showed Hazel to my girlfriend Patti and she fell in love too! It's hard not to fall in love with Hazel! Patti and I adopted her and she became part of our senior pack.

The other day I noticed Hazel was a bit off and not like herself at all. I took her into Malibu Coast Animal Hospital and it turns out that her gallbladder was bad. She was very very sick….. again. She was not responding to antibiotics and things were getting worse. We had to take her to ASEC (Animal Specialty & Emergency Center) to have emergency surgery to have her gallbladder removed. Hazel is estimated to be about 13-14 years old. It's always risky for seniors dogs to have surgery especially such an invasive surgery as having the gallbladder removed. But we had to do it. Thankfully Hazel made it through surgery. She's recovering well. We are so thankful this was done because it saved her life!!! The doctor said her gallbladder was rotten and dead.

This was a very expensive surgery. Normally Patti and I have been able to handle everything on our own, but this has been an extremely bad year for us. Two of our babies got sick and passed away. We have had at least four surgeries and countless trips to the vet prior to this. This is the first time we have ever had to ask for help.

Hazel has already been though so much. But she is worth whatever it takes to help her! So many people love her and care about her. When she was in the Agoura shelter she was loved by all the Agoura volunteers.  They took such good care of her. She had some medical issues that were taken care of by Healthcare for Homeless Animals, a nonprofit group that works through the Agoura Shelter. The medical staff at Agoura helped take care of her as well. Unfortunately she started declining in the shelter environment. She was not doing well and became very ill and needed to get out of there. She had a chronic cough that would just not go away with any treatment and she was not interested in eating.

When Patti and I adopted Hazel she was so skinny and so sick, but we had to try to help her to become well and live a good life. With the help of the amazing vets at the wonderful Malibu Coast Animal Hospital the chronic cough was tackled. She also put on some much needed weight. She has been fat and happy until the day I noticed she wasn't well.

Hazel has been with us for just about a year and a half now. She has been doing great. She loves her fur sisters and brother and they love her too. She snuggles with her two little sisters Dixie and Hope. She loves to run after her big brother and sister and be involved with them when they are chasing things outside. She loves her big sister Anna too. Hazel has lost two of her adopted siblings this year, this of course made her sad. But she's always happy to meet a new family member.

Hazel is an absolute sweetheart! I will pick her up and hold her like a baby and then ask for a kiss….. she always gives me a kiss and then another and another! I call her my Hazel Bean and my sweet sugar dumpling. She loves meeting new people. She will run up and sniff their shoe and then run off…. then do it all over gain. She's so silly.

Patti and I have been adopting senior dogs together for about 12 years now. We take the ones that no one wants anymore. Some of them are strays that no one claims such as Hazel. Some are strays that when contacted the owner says they don't want them back. Some are seniors that get dumped by their families just because they are old and the family wants a new puppy! So heartbreaking!!! But we feel we are meant to be here to take care of these sweet old fur babies! We love to take care of them and spoil them rotten! We try to give them the best lives we possibly can while they're still with us. Our hearts break every time one passes away. We feel like a part of us has died along with them. It never gets any easier. But knowing we gave them a chance and they had a good life with us is a very good feeling. It's all worth it!

The surgery for Hazel was beyond our means, but we had to do it to save her life. And it did save her life. So, we are coming to you to ask if any of you would be willing to help pay off the cost for saving her precious life. As I always see on other fundraisers, any amount helps, and that is very true. It all helps.  Just like in animal rescue, it takes a village. I'm glad that we are part of such a wonderful village of animal loving people.

With our deepest heartfelt thank you,
Hazel, Gator, Patti, Koda, Scooter, Dixie, Hope and Anna
