Please, help me get my mom and sister out of Venezuela
I need your help because my mother Coni and my sister Maria Fernanda, who suffers from cerebral palsy, still live in Venezuela. I am asking anyone with a big heart to help me get my mom and Maria out of Venezuela as soon as possible. The plan is for them to move to Medellin, Colombia, where she has a support network and can start a new life.
To summarize the reasons why I so desperately need your help in getting my mom and Maria Fernanda out of Venezuela, and to Medellin, Colombia:
- Lack of food. (I have to buy and ship them pretty much everything from the States to Caracas, which costs thousands of dollars and there’s no way of ensuring it gets to them.)
- Lack of medicines. (I have to buy and have them shipped from Colombia. Never sure the meds will arrive to the destination.)
- The risk that something could happen to my mom, leaving Maria Fernanda alone and vulnerable. No access to care, medicine or treatments.
- The risk that something could happen to Maria while there is no access to medicine or treatment in the country.
- Living in terror that my mom could be assaulted while out buying food. They basically live like prisoners. She even sold her car years ago for fear that she could too be victim of a car robbery while with Maria Fernanda in the car.
- Electrical cuts and country-wide blackouts for hours and days / Very little access to water/ Communication blackout.
- A looming civil war. Time is of the essence.
I could name many more reasons they would be better off elsewhere, but I think that these are serious and paint the picture. I am especially nervous that a civil war could break out at any moment making their exit extremely difficult and dangerous. So I hope with your help I can help them get out soon.
The funds will help her cover the costs of the move and adjustment during their first year while my mom can find herself a job and stabilize. She is a smart and hardworking lady, I trust that with your help and her strengths, they could be thriving in her new city within a year.
We estimate that they would need about USD$2500 a month (for rent, food, medical insurance, Maria’s therapy and medicines, and incidentals) for the first year. Additionally we are asking for help to cover the costs of their trip (flights), the move itself (shipping their basic belongings), and perhaps purchase a basic vehicle to move Maria around, once in Medellin.

My mom is my sister’s full-time caregiver. Maria can only walk with assistance and her speech and mobility are limited. She requires 24/7 care.
Maria is a ray of sunshine for everyone who meets her; he is full of love and brings joy to everyone around her! Whether listening to music, dancing, painting or laughing at her favorite TV shows, Maria shows constant signs of improvement.
It is very important that she continues receiving physical and language therapy, which has helped her mobility, strength, stability and confidence. But access to these therapies has become increasingly limited -if available at all- in Venezuela.

You may wonder, how have my mom and I dealt with this for so long?
It has not been easy. For the past 3 years I have sent her boxes every few months packed with non-perishables, hygiene products, toilet paper, clothes and all other basic necessities for regular life. No luxuries, just everyday items. As of now, we have been lucky that the packages arrived and were not stolen by customs, which is always a risk.
She sustains herself and Maria with a part time job, the money that I send, the packages, and with what few items she can sometimes still find in Caracas. I also have to buy and ship all their medications from Colombia. The most important medication being the one for Maria Fernanda (Trileptal) for her Trigeminal Neuralgia. (That is: spontaneous attacks of pain or attacks triggered by things such as touching the face, chewing, speaking or brushing teeth. Bouts of paralyzing pain in the brain that can take days to recover from.)
Maria Fernanda has to take this medication every single day. A day missed can trigger an attack, convulsions and the need for urgent care. This medicine saves her life. It’s a serious challenge to get medication to her. The high cost and having to buy and ship it from Colombia -plus the insecurity that the package will get to its destination- make it very uncertain that she’ll always have it available.
That is how we have managed up to now. But this process will be ending is very soon. The situation in Venezuela is unsustainable and further collapse is imminent. I called the service I use for shipping to rush them some supplies due of the current blackout. But they are not flying supplies anymore, only shipping by boat. This takes at least 15-30 days to arrive, and could end at any moment.
What is it like to have family in Venezuela, and why do I need my mom and sister Maria out of there?
It is highly stressful for them and for me, especially with Maria Fernanda and her disability. I am thankful they are healthy today, but they have no one else there. All of my mom’s friends and support network have left the country, she only has two people from her building she can trust.
The truth is, we live in terror. If something were to happen to my mom, Maria Fernanda would be alone, with cerebral palsy and no way to communicate clearly. She would be alone until I can make my way there from the US. This is extremely dangerous, and that is why I need your help to get them to Medellin, so they can be in a safer place and rebuild their lives.

Necesito tu ayuda porque mi mamá Coni y mi hermanita Maria Fernanda, quien sufre de parálisis cerebral, aún viven en Venezuela. Le estoy pidiedo a personas de corazón grande que me ayuden a sacarlas de Venezuela lo mas pronto posible. El plan es mudarlas a Medellín, Colombia, donde tienen un grupo de apoyo y pueden comenzar una nueva vida.
Para resumir las razones por las que necesito desesperadamente tu ayuda para sacarlas de Venezuela, y llevarlas a Medellin, Colombia:
- No hay comida (Yo tengo que enviarles básicamente todo desde los Estados Unidos, lo cual cuesta miles de dólares y nunca hay certeza que lo recibirán.)
- No hay medicinas. (Yo tengo que comprar las medicinas y enviarlas desde Colombia. Nunca con seguridad de que llegarán a su destino.)
- El riesgo de que algo le podría pasar a mi mamá, dejándo a Maria sola y vulnerable. Además sin acceso a cuidado médico, medicinas o tratamientos.
- El riesgo que algo le podría pasar a Maria, sin haber medicinas o tratamientos en el país.
- Viviendo en terror que pueden asaltar a mi mamá cuando sale a comprar comida. Ellas básicamente viven como prisioneras. Mi mamá hasta vendió su auto por temor que la robáran estando con Maria en el auto.
- Cortes de electricidad por horas y días/ Muy poco acceso a agua / Incomunicados.
- El temor que es posible que se desate una guerra civil.
Podría mencionar muchas más razones por las cuales ellas estarían major en cualquier otro lugar, pero creo que éstas son serias y pintan la situación. Especialmente la posibilidad que se desate una guerra civil las dejaría atrapadas allí. Espero que con tu ayuda ellas puedan salir pronto.
Los Costos
Los fondos estarán destinados a cubrir los costos de moverse de país y el ajuste durante el primer año, mientras mi mamá encuentra un trabajo y se estabiliza. Ella es una mujer inteligente y muy trabajadora y confío que con tu ayuda y sus habilidades, ellas podrían estar establecidas en un año.
Estimamos que necesitarán aproximadamente USD$2500 al mes (para alquiler, comida, seguro médico, terapia de Maria y medicinas) por el primer año, y estamos pidiendo ayuda adicional para cubrir el costo de moverse, el viaje y la compra de un vehículo básico para mover a Maria una vez en Medellin.

No ha sido fácil. En los últimos 3 años yo le he enviado a mi mamá cajas cada unos meses llenas de comida, productos básicos del día a día, ropa, papel toilet, etc. Nada de lujo, sólo cosas básicas necesarias de la vida. Hasta ahora hemos tenido suerte que ha recibido los paquetes y los trabajadores de inmigración no se los han robado, lo cual siempre es un riesgo que se corre.
Mi mamá se mantiene a ella y a Maria con un trabajo de medio tiempo, el dinero que yo envío, los paquetes y las pocas cosas que encuentra en Caracas. Yo también tengo que comprar todas las medicinas y enviárselas desde Colombia. La medicina mas importante es una de Maria Fernanda para la Neuralgia del Trigémino (Ataques espontáneos de dolor en la cabeza que le toman días para recuperarse.)
Maria tiene que tomar esta medicina todos los días sin falta porque un ataque la puede llevar a la pérdida de la conciencia y al hospital. La medicina le salva la vida y es muy difícil hacérsela llegar desde Colombia, entre el costo y la incertidumbre de no saber si llegará.
Así hemos aguantado hasta ahora, pero esto ya llegó a su punto final. La situación en Venezuela es muy delicada y se pondrá aún peor. Yo llamé al servicio de los envíos de comida y me dijeron que no estaban volando comida, que sólo por barco, el cual tarda de 15-30 días. Y ese servicio también podría acabar.
Como es tener familia en Venezuela y por qué quiero sacar a mi madre y hermana de allí?
Es altamente estresante para ellas y para mi. Especialmente con Maria y sus discapacidades. Soy agradecida que las dos están saludables ahora, pero ellas no tienen a nadie en Caracas. Todas las amigas y grupo de apoyo de mi mamá se fueron del país. Ella tiene dos personas de confianza en su edificio.
La verdad es que nosotros vivimos en terror de que si algo le pasara a mi mamá, Maria estaría sola, con parálisis cerebral y sin forma de comunicarse claramente. Estaría sola hasta que yo llegara desde los Estados Unidos. Esto es muy peligroso y por eso estoy buscando ayuda, para que puedan estar en un lugar seguro y reconstruir sus vidas.

Maria es un rayo de luz para todo el que la conoce. Siempre está llena de amor y le trae alegría a quienes la rodean.
