"Pinning Our Hopes" is an evening of inspiration and action around the issues of social justice and citizenship raised in the 2016 election. On Saturday January 14, 2017 Boston's best writers and performers will gather in Deane Hall at the Calderwood Pavillion in Boston, MA to showcase works embracing our obligation to reject xenophobia, racism, homophobia, sexism, faith-discrimination, anti-immigrant sentiment, ableism, and transphobia in policy, discourse, or practice. Proceeds raised will go to New England- based social justice organizations.
Award-winning Boston playwright David Valdez Greenwood is organizing the event. This past summer I was lucky to play the role of Ondi Rivers in David's play "Raggedy And" at the Vermont Pride Festival. David came to opening night. I guess I made an impression because he has asked me to reprise my soliloquy at the conclusion of the play, delivering Ondi Rivers' Inaugural Poem "On Pledging" at the Pinning Our Hopes performances.
There will be performances at 4pm and 8 pm,
I am honored (and excited) to be asked to participate in this event. And to deliver this poem again. But I am looking at some expenses. I will be traveling from my home in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom to Boston -- a three-hour drive one way in good weather. So a "round trip" really isn't in the cards, especially in winter. I plan to drive to Boston Friday evening and return Sunday. I will incur hotel, gas, parking, and meals expenses. And I would like to make a donation to this cause, too.
Will you please help me defray expenses? 28 people giving $27 apiece (a la Bernie)? Any contributions in excess of my out of pocket expenses will go to Pinning Our Hopes charities.
