Thomas Grier  DULUTH, MN
Who am I?  My name is Thomas Grier, I was trained at the U of MN Medical School Duluth as a microbiologist. During those years I was a runner, camper, backpacker and nature enthusiast.

Eleven years later in 1990 I was disabled and diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and placed on a waiting list for a nursing home.

In Spring of 1991 I was correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease, and began a slow and tortuous 25 year revovery that left me with a damaged heart, severe fatigue, seizural like episodes, and depression, but I was alive and recently able to resume work as a microbiologist.

MS Research: I became interested in whether other MS patients were being misdiganosed like I was. Did they have  an incuarbale disease like MS or a treatable brain infection caused by Borrelia species of spirochetes?

Since my illness was correctly diagnosed, I have been for over 20 years a researcher, writer, and activist fighting for better research to investigate the brain involvement of Borrelia bacteria in diseases such as MS, Alzheimers, and undefined neurological disorders.

About 20 years ago I became friends with a pathologist doing Lyme disease and Alzheimer's research. His name is  Alan MacDonald MD, and just a few years ago we decided to team up and consolidate our efforts.

Who are we?  We formed the Dr. Paul H. Duray Pathology Research Fellowship Endowment Fund.  (PHD-Fund)

A long title but our mission statement is simple: Through pathology (brain-autopsies) we would determine the true involvement of certain bacteria in the pathogenisis of Alzheimers, Multiple Sclerosis, Lewy Body Dementia, and other undefined neurological brain disorders.

We developed special State-of-the-Art FISH stains that use DNA probes to identify the bacteria in brain tissue and then make the bacteria light up with fluorescent dyes.  No one else has our stains or our DNA-Beacons!

Since teaming up with Alan MacDonald, what we have found in a very short time is that a high percentage of Alzheimer's patients have the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

The Borrelia spirochetes are deep within their brains,  and often associated with the patient's Alzheimer-Plaques. We are now seeking evidence that the Borrelia biofilms that form in human brains help initiate Plaque formation.

Quite frequently we find another  bacteria in Alzheimer patient's brains: Borrelia miyamotoi is a Relapsing Fever bacteria that isn't supposed to be in the patients we sampled. We have evidence that patients in America have been infected for decades, but it is only in the last two years that we had the proper-stains to detect this pathogen.

We believe that Borrelia miyamotoi is harder to erradicate with antibiotics and is better at protecting itself from the immune system the the Lyme disease spirochete. It is a new killer and crippler of patients that takes a heavy toll on the patients' mental faculties.

The picture above is from a 51 year old lumberman from Twig MN who was bit by hundreds of ticks in his lifetime. Despite 7 years of antibiotics, the active infection with Borrelia miyamotoi survived inside his brain.

The same patient had clear images of Borrelia burgdorferi in his testicle. This man was bed ridden for the last several years until the end of his life.  His suffering for two decades was unecessary.

What are we doing?  Alan and I want to sample as many brains with MS and Alzheimer's as we can to determine what bacteria are causing dementias, where the greatest risks are, and ways to intervene and treat these diseases in earlier stages.

What is the money for?  We help train other microscopists on how to do a very specialized kind of pathology research.

To do that we need very specialized microscopes called epi-fluourescent microscopes. The scopes we use cost about $6,000 and are outfitted with another $4,000 worth of Fluorite Zeiss optics and a special Darkfield condenser.  We need two more scopes: one for our lab in Oklahoma and another for traveling to teach Medical Students and Grad Students our techniques using our proprietery stains.  If we used new Zeiss scopes they would cost over $30,000!

Frugal:  We are frugal, and to that end I will repeat that no member of the PHD-Fund is paid. All work is done entirely on a volunteer basis.

Stains: There is nothing more important to our work than the stains we use. They are what make our work dazzling!

The bacteria we seek are nearly invisible without proper stains. We have four DNA Beacon Probe FISH stains now, but there are over two-dozen other pathogenic Borrelia species that we need stains for. We can make these for about $3,000 a piece.

Our development costs are about 10-100x less expensive than what a corporation or government agency would need to do the same work.  We are volunteers and do not get paid a salary.

Equipment Needed:  In addition to microscopes we need a Nanoodrop CSF analyzer to help sort out species of bacteria that infect people.  Listed below are some basic needs beyond our current budget.

2 - Epifluorescent Microscopes $20,000 total

1 - Nanodrop CSF analyzer  $10,000

1 - PCR Thermal Mutiplier

12 - New FISH Stains

1 -  Tissue Freezer

1 - Medical autoclave

How soon do we need your help?  We have been self funded by our board members for years, but we now have a non-profit tax deductible corporation so we can accept tax deductible contributions.  Many patients have already benefited from our work and can be seen on my FaceBook page.

We are available to everyone for questions and advice and can explain the process of how to donate tissues to our research. Our research is shared our spending and needs are transparent.

How thankful will we be?  Over the years dozens of patients and famlies have asked for our help to do a proper brain-autopsy that includes searching for Borrelia bacteria in the brain.

The response from the families when we find answers is a genuine reward all by itself. Please help us help others by contributing to our fund so we can complete our research and publish our work.

No one else is doing what we do, which means no one is finding the results we are finding. With the best technology in microbiology today we want to prove the relationship between Borrelia spirochetes and serious neurological disease pathology.

To date not one taxpayer dollar has been spent on pathology based research on neurological Lyme disease.  To get better answers we need better research! Sincerely , Thomas Grier

The Dr. Paul H Duray Pathology Research Fellowship has done some amazing things in the last 18 months.

Most of these research accomplishments have been reiterated in the paper: "The Seven Provocative Discoveries by Dr Alan MacDonald concerning MS. Alzheimer's and Neuro-Borreliosis"

Our research has always been both cause-and-effect oriented and meant to help patients currently sick.

We are not about prevention - We are about helping patients that are currently sick to get better!

An example of cause-and-effect-research is when Alan discovered Nematodes in MS spinal fluids, and then went back and found nematodes in the same Alzheimer's brain we found Borrelia, and then stained for nematodes using specialized stain.

He not only found worms but he found larvae, zygotes and eggs. Thousands of eggs and nematode poop.

Vast blank spaces seen on slides were swaths of brain cells eaten by worms and nothing to show in the wake of destruction, except eggs and worm excrement.

A horrifying thought.

Another cause and effect research revelation. Borrelia biofilms cover all Alzheimer's plaques, but most often it is not B burgdorferi but it is Borrelia myamotoi a Relapsing Fever Borrelia that is not detect by Lyme blood tests.

So sick dementia patients being test repeatedly for Lyme will test negative.

The result: Treat on the basis of clinical symptoms and create better tests.

The PHD-Fellowship has designed and commissioned two such tests. Two DNA-PCR tests that detect all pathogenic species of Borrelia in one blood test. It is non specific on purpose. But ask yourself should any dementia patients ever have any species of Borrelia in their brain?

Pleas help us create these and better tests. Help us continue our work for the patients currently suffering from MS, Dementia, Alzheimer's, Lewy-Body disease, Parkinsons, Lyme disease and more.

Your donations go a long way. Our work continues but we need your help. Approximately 60 % of all our research monies came from our own board members.
That is how much they believe. When we dipped into the red, board members always paid the bills!

Donations are tax deductible and soon we will have Pay Pal as a way to pay, until then a personal check or Go Fund Me donations are the best way to show your support!

Help the patients who are sick and demand that tax dollars go to better pathology research. To date no tax payer dollar has ever gone to human pathology research on Lyme Disease. How is that even possible? All attempts to do this have been rejected.

We do Human Pathology Research looking at infectious etiologies for MS and Alzheimers and we found some! And our discoveries are already helping patients !

Since Alan MacDoanl announced that Glial cell brain tumors contained both Borrelia and Nematodes, the worm medicine mebendazole has been applying for a cancer treatment indication! That is cause and effect medicine and not useless minutiae.

Please support our research and donate!

Hello everyone,

Since this specific fund raiser was created in January of 2016, it has raised $455.00 mostly from my nephew and friends.

I think our team has done amazing things since January and most of those discoveries have been capsulized in the paper: "The Seven Provocative Things Alan MacDonald Has Discovered About Dementia and Lyme Disease"

In just 18 months Alan made the connection between MS, and Dementia's being associated with Nematode worms.

The idea of worms laying eggs and pooping in our brains is revolting, but what may turn out to be worse is that the alpha-synuclein protein in nematodes is toxic to our neurons and may be a large contributor to brain-cell death and dementia. More study is needed.

A good reason to donate is that almost all of our research work is patient oriented. It is pathology done on human patients, and has a direct benefit to patients.

A good example is when Alan found nematodes in the spinal Fluids of MS patients, he immediately went back to our Alzheimer's thin brain sections, and stained them for nematodes (pan-cyto-keritin-red stain)

He found nematode adults, larvae, zygotes and thousands of worm eggs and poop.

Blank spaces on the slide was where a nematode passed through and ate brain cells leaving nothing behind but its excrement.

This cause and effect research allowed the immediate extrapolation that treating pre-dementia, MS and Lyme Borreliosis with anti-parasite drugs could be beneficial, and the hundreds patient accounts we have gotten back support just that.

Another cause and effect discovery: Borrelia miyamotoi a Tick Borne Relapsing Fever bacteria, is more commonly in the brains of Alzheimer's patients than B. burgdorferi the Lyme spirochete. That means regular Lyme Serology Tests miss this bacteria. The patient continues to get sick without treatment, and the test keep coming back negative !

A good reason to make more and better tests. For that reason we commissioned the creation of two new PCR tests for blood that picks up all pathogenic species of Borrelia ! That is huge, and why no one else did it speaks to greed and profit.

Please donate and support our student teachings, our special staining, out brain autopsies, and creating new tests that can be beneficial to patients who are currently sick.

We are not about prevention !

We are all about helping the currently sick.

Alan and most of our board have been at this for 20+ years and we are not about to stop now especially when we have the best tools and the best science.

Please donate now, so much more needs to be done including more and better FISH stains, a patient treatment trial, educational videos, and training young researchers and doctors.

After talking with Alan this morning we are excited to announce that we have decided to design and offer at least one research stipend to qualifying students to learn epi-fluorescence techniques and FISH stain methods, and complete a short Summer study project.

When we have the details worked out we will announce a $2,000 stipend and how to apply for the Summer project.

Thanks to pour brave initial donors! Please help us to reach our first financial goal ! TG

Hello everyone ;) Duray research performed 1 yr. ago my late husband, JACK GORDON'S, brain autopsy finding WORLDWIDE HISTORY of 2 diseases NEVER found together before!! ********************************************** Borrelia/Lyme disease and LEWY body dementia causing visual/VIOLENT hallucinations like late actor/comedian Robin Williams had!! Alan MacDonald told me this on the phone 11.22.15 that since Jack is 1st in WORLD with this major discovery, they/we are writing him up for a SCIENTIFIC MEDICAL JOURNAL article to be published sometime in future with ME, a non-medical person, as FIRST CO-AUTHOR over him, Paula Pierce, whose Excalibur lab in Norman, Oklahoma got Jack's entire brain and did her work prior to Alan's doing the blood staining. Tom Grier was to write this up which he's done partially but this stopped since Alan retired full-time from this work. It will be PURSUED again with the help of Minnesota's microbiologist's medical help!! Yippee!! Paula and Alan also discovered Jack had a filarial nematode parasitic worm in his brain!! When cutting it in half, it showed LYME disease inside of it. Another MAJOR find! They actually found 3 different major things. Jack NEVER been out of the country and only a few states east, north, south, and west of IOWA!! They have found other worms in the various other diseases, MS, AD, etc. mentioned above! I gave a very large generous donation of $40,000 one year ago so they could continue giving families the peace of mind that I received with Jack's official scientific medical EVIDENCE of what he had vs. what he DIDN'T have! This was a huge step as Jack/I are very frugal our entire 40 years of marriage! But I know I did the right thing in my heart. Jack was never diagnosed or treated for either of these 2 diseases! His Lyme disease goes back 35 years as it does ME; so between the 2 of us to date, we have had LYME 82 yrs. of our combined lives!! UNACCEPTABLE! I would encourage EACH of you to get involved in what you can do EVEN if it is just ONE DOLLAR; it adds up since we have over 1+ million with tick-borne diseases!! To watch a recent 1.37 hr. Sept. 2016 video of Tom Grier's BRAIN AUTOPSY video discussing & showing slides of patient brains of Lyme, MS, Lewy body dementia from my late husband, Jack Gordon, and discussing nematode parasitic worms, watch here! Also, I talk from my heart the last 7 minutes of this video ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-7GIinA9GY Thank you all for reading this far; God bless Alan MacDonald, Paula Pierce, and Tom Grier for having started this much needed service that is/has NOT been provided by any medical resource here in USA!! ********************************************************************** I had donated $1,000 earlier when Alan had his 1st gofundme to raise money for the bloodstaining slides as it costs that much then to do ONE patient; so MY donation ended up being used 4+ months later unsuspectedly on my OWN HUSBAND, JACK'S autopsy! It wasn't given that way ... just the way it turned out. God works wonders ;) Betty Gordon, Iowa Lyme/Lewy body dementia/Parkinson's/cancer activist 48 yrs. chronic Lyme 35 yrs. misdiagnosed by 40-50 drs; unacceptable! (:
