POW! WOW! Nepal: Koseli School

This April, partnered with POW!WOW! Worldwide and a team of international artists, we’re headed back to The Koseli School for Children in Kathmandu to co-create, teach workshops and revitalize on behalf of a cause that speaks to the future of child education in our third world countries.
Children of Nepal:
For most, the day begins by waking up in their shared shacks by the river, taking care of their parents and siblings before they get ready and leave for school.
The statistics and cultural acceptance for substance abuse and addictions in Nepal is at an all time high.
The results of these statistics leave thousands of children responsible to to care for themselves and their families as the head of their homes, everyday. Due to the extreme levels of poverty and these conditions, many children are never afforded the opportunity to attend school - finding themselves forced at a young age to find ways to create income for their families.
Their resiliency, light hearts, creative spirits and willingness to step into these advanced roles amongst the conditions is beyond inspiring.
These children are great teachers and we are humbled to be of service in any way that we can.
Koseli School of Kathmandu:
Out of love for the future of this population, the Koseli School was born.
As the Nepali word for “gift”, Koseli seeks to empower these children, offering a space for learning and connection.
Currently, the school proudly enrolls approximately 100 students, ranging from the age of 4-16 years.
Each student at Koseli receives:
- Two meals a day (often the only food they will receive)
- Clothing
- Medial attention
- A safe space for the children to learn, dance, sing and build community!
Your Donations Will Support:
- Transportation costs for volunteers
- Construction Materials, resources and tools: repair of the infrastructure in order to create hygienic and safe restrooms for children
- Workshop supplies for children and teachers
All funds raised from the project will go directly towards the benefit and revitalization of The Koseli school of Kathmandu.
What Are We Doing There?
Over the course of one week, the team will lead...
- Revitalization of the school - working with the children to paint and create an aesthetically beautiful school they can be proud of - creating murals to beautify the aging property.
- Workshops - Modalities of creativity lead by professional artistians.
- Work with local Nepalese to repair, rebuild and create a safe, clean space for the children to learn and grow - classrooms, floors, doors and bathrooms.
Artists have the unique ability to engage, inspire, and educate future generations and as such, we hope to spread the possibility of a positive future to children who may not otherwise be able to see it.
Nepal is an incredibly artistically-rich country where handmade crafts are celebrated and folk art is alive and well through Thangka paintings, textiles, ornate temple painting, music and dance; we want these kids to take pride in their histories while learning new techniques. Through one-on-one connection, we want to provide the children with experience in painting, fabric dying, book making and other creative processes in the hope that these children can impact a lasting positive change on the community around them.
