Imaging Machine for Cancer Research

The Pacific Heart, Lung, & Blood Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research organization dedicated to findings treatments and cures for diseases of the chest and blood. Our scientists perform research in the area of immunotherapy (using the persons own immune system to fight cancer) using a variety of methods. They also mentor students from UCLA as well as Loyola Marymount University in research techniques. The research that we preform is basic science and requires some pieces of equipment that are too expensive for use to buy but also not paid for by grants. We collaborate with physicians and researchers from both UCLA and the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, and we have a specific interest in the care of Veterans as they develop chest diseases faster and more often than almost any other group. We have a need for a FACS machine which analyzes surface markers on tumor and immune cells. We have been using machines in collaborating laboratories but this is very difficult since they are being used by quite a number of people and waiting is slowly down our research. This machine is too expensive for us to buy but if we can raise money for it, we will be able to substantially accelerate our research into finding better treatments and hopefully a cure for many of the chest diseases that we investigate. The ultimate benefactor will be cancer patients!
