Fly Free, Miranda Star

August 2019

Arlene and Mike had to bury their beautiful 16-year-old daughter, Miranda Star, after a five-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. They never imagined this day would come. But it did -- with crushing heartbreak, and a mountain of medical and funeral bills.

Miranda had already beaten Ewing's sarcoma four times. Yet, she did not let cancer define her. Just before her death, she went to San Diego Comic Con. She checked out the new Powerpuff Girls clothing she helped design. She visited with innovators she met through her love of Star Wars, Dr. Who, and Riverdale. After her trip to San Diego, she had planned to draft new fashion designs, to redecorate her room, and to get ready for her junior year in high school. But Miranda's plans were cut short when she suffered a cardiac arrest, from which her body never recovered. She took her last breath on July 21 at 5:25 p.m.

Miranda may no longer be in this world, but she is now a luminous star in a dark sky. Please help honor her life by helping her family cover ancillary medical costs, and funeral expenses. No parent should have to face a life without their child. No one with this excruciating loss should also have to bear such a staggering financial burden. Please help. Your support and compassion are greatly appreciated. Feel free to share this post. Thank you.

Dear Miranda Star,

We watched as your mother snuggled up to you, caressed your face, and whispered in your ear. Your father drank coffee - lots of it. He didn't want to miss another moment with you, even though he hadn't slept in days, caring for you as you struggled for earthly breath. You tried to speak - your words unintelligible, but your spirit was loud and clear. It was a harmony of quiet strength, fierce passion, quick wit and sweet love. The sound reverberated in our hearts, like the steady ebb and flow of waves in the ocean, and like the explosion of a supernova.

Your brother held your hand, his face pained knowing he had to let you go soar into the heavens as celestial beings do. "She's free to fly," your grandmother said, even though she longed to massage your warm body with her achy hands one more time. Your grandfather walked the halls, your cousins shed tears, and your friends didn't know what to do.

But you, Miranda Star, knew. You always knew. In your 16 years, you did more than those who lived longer years. Because you knew.

Life is precious and fragile.

Live it.

And we will, as you did. Fly free, Miranda Star. We will take care of your family.

Love,
Your friends

P.S. Please feel free to contribute to expenses related to Miranda's final earthly care.

Miranda Star looks like a typical teenager who loves music star Billie Eilish, Star Wars, Dr. Who, andStranger Things. Deep down, she is actually a warrior, battling the force of evil that is cancer. She slayed Ewing’s Sarcoma3 times and is now fighting it again. She has gone farther than anyone thought possible, and although she is going to war again, her future is uncertain.

Miranda is the hero that we need in this world, but the constant beatings of chemo, surgery, and radiation have battered her 16-year-old body. They’ve also raided the family’s financial arsenal. After 5 years in the trenches of cancer, they could use help to cover the costs of her medical expenses. And, frankly, they could all use a morale boost too.

Won’t you help Miranda fight the good fight? This young girl – who is an inspiration to all of us -- is in the fight of her life. With your generosity, we can help Miranda’s incredible family ease the financial stress of expensive medical bills.

The goal is to get Miranda strong enough so she can travel to research centers around the country, and possibly, the world, to do what we all want to do: F@*!# cancer!

Together, let’s show that cancer doesn’t have a chance against the amazing spirit and inner strength of people like Miranda Star. Please forward this as widely as possible.
