Oliver the Newfie needs surgery

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Nick Wheeler. I am a full time Kraft paper mill worker and part time bladesmith. I am also the very proud Dad of two amazing Newfoundland dogs, Oliver and Bentley. They are everything you would think a Newfie to be... amazingly sweet, huge, beautiful, and the most loving beings you could ever imagine.

Oliver recently started having some mobility issues that were initially diagnosed as arthritis in his knees (even though he's not 5 years old yet). We began the typical treatment, but his condition got worse VERY FAST. We were referred to an Orthopedic Veterinary Surgeon, who determined Oliver has torn his Cruciate ligament in BOTH knees. This is comparable to a person tearing their ACL in both legs. The best option for him now, is to have bilateral TPLO surgery to reconstruct both of his knees.

Unfortunately, I missed the month of January from my job due to my back (herniated discs with annular tears). This has put me in a really bad position to be facing a pretty staggeringly expensive surgery to get Oliver healthy and pain free. It is ridiculously hard for me to ask for help, but it's even harder to see him in pain. If I had time to save, I wouldn't need to ask for help...but he needs the surgery yesterday. He can barely walk, and I have to use a sling to help him get up and around. That's not easy with a 170 pound dog.

It kills me to see him not well. I got Oliver and his brother when they were 9 weeks old, and brought them home right at the same time I closed on my first house. They have seen me through some incredibly difficult times. They are what makes this house a home. They are such a huge part of my heart and my life, I really don't even know how to articulate it.

I would be so incredibly grateful for any help to get him better.

As a thank you, I would like to offer something up that all contributors could be drawn for. I have a pretty strong world wide following for my knife making... so I think something like a damascus kitchen knife would be the most universally appreciated. If you are able to contribute and would like to be put in the drawing, please just include a way for me to identify and contact you.

Thank you so, so much, for reading my story. It is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

If you'd like to see more pictures of my boys, as well as the level of work that I do, please take a look at my Insta account: Nick_Wheeler_Knives_and_Newfs
