Inspire To Do for Rio Paralympics

Inspire to Do aims to inspire dreams for children with special needs by sharing the Paralympic Games, guiding focused mentoring and role modeling experiences with Paralympic athletes and providing mentoring and skills building in the community.
This is year we are traveling to Obra Social Dona Meca (OSDM) orphanage in Rio De Janeiro! As Occupational Therapists and volunteers, we will be spending a week being inspired by and inspiring the children of OSDM via the Paralympic Games, immediately after the Olympics, this September in Rio De Janeiro.
Our communities are enriched by raising awareness that all children can be vibrant, contributing members of our society in spite of, and because of, their differences. Our Inspire to Do summer camp offers the children opportunities to participate in and see the world beyond the walls of their disabilities and physical parameters. Led by pediatric therapists and trained counselors, the children are assisted in accessing their communities to their greatest potential. They learn skills for activities of daily living at their level of function, such as accessing transportation, managing money, or learning problem solving skills to participate in their communities in relevant ways. We will share inspiring experiences with the children that expand their perceptions of what is possible as well as increase their independence in participating as functional members of society. As a result, they gain confidence, respect, and dignity.
The Obra Social Dona Meca is a rehabitation center with orphanage for kids with disabilities in Rio also serves children in the community who come in for rehabilitation therapy. The center serves children with a wide variety of diagnoses physical and cognitive disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, Encephalopathy, Cerebral Palsy, among others.
The staff and community is hoping to gain funds for adapted sports equipment, sports wheelchairs, a Wii system, basketballs and nets, etc..
