ORCA Peru - The Organisation for the Research and Conservation of Aquatic Animals is a Peruvian non-profit organisation that survives solely on donations from the public and through volunteering schemes.
We rescue and rehabilitate all marine animals - Sea Lions, Dolphins, Penguins, Sea Turtles and Marine Otters, all at the South Pacific Marine Mammal Center located in San Bartolo, 52km south of Lima City. Our rescues occur throughout the country and we travel by any means to reach animals in need.
Our center is the only fully operational medical rehabilitation and research center for marine mammals in the country and also helping with other species in need. It is open on the weekends for visitors to see what we do and learn about the wildlife they are normally kept separate from. We also run educational campaigns with schools, hoping to create an increased appreciation of marine wildlife and environmental conservation amongst future generations. Our international volunteering and interning opportunities allow people from around the World to gain first hand experience with all of these animals learning from our director Dr. Carlos Yaipen-Llanos, the first marine mammal veterinarian in the country. The ORCA team also carries out vital research throughout the Peruvian coastline on all marine species.
However, Peru has few environmental protection laws and no law enforcement as many people are disconnected or uneducated about marine mammals. Attacks from fishermen using poison and hits to the head with clubs or hooks are becomming far more common every year, meaning our center is under increasing pressure. In June 2015 ORCA was the first organisation to successfully rehabilitate sea turtles from plastic poisoning in Peru. More rescues, rehabilitations and a pressure for more research means more costs and with no Governmental or outside financial help, ORCA is struggling to pay for fees with our housing at the South Pacific Mammal Center, as the patients will always get the priority.
ORCA's name has grown considerably throughout Peru in the last several years and our very small team is expected to be in every location at once when an injured or stranded animal is reported. Our organisation is responsible for so much in the country but needs to ask for help from the public around the world to continue our fight to save many more lives.
