OM GROWN DANCERS SEASON 2

CAMPAIGN GOAL:  JANUARY 31st

A L K H A W F  ( the fear )

In just 12 short months of the company's establishment, the OM grown dancers have successfully sold out their inaugural debut in June 2017, engaged in 2 local dance festivals in North Carolina: Emergence and The North Carolina Dance Festival, travelled to Virginia and Oklahoma to perform in The Richmond Dance Festival and The Bell House Exchange Festival and travelled internationally to the Dominican Republic to represent the United States as the the only American dance company in EDANCO!

The OM grown dancers have continued their evolution and gained tremendous momentum! This upcoming season will be filled with 2 world premiers, international debuts and an international tour to the South! The board members and dancers are working tirelessly preparing a production to: Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama and Mexico City!

Founder and Artistic Director Courtney OM could have only dreamt of the momentum that the company is ferociously building.  With consistent rehearsal weekends between 8-10 hours long and countless conversations strategizing about the future, it is clear that OM grown dancers will be obtaining full production and performance weekends and international touring status in no time! The persistency and consistency of the company is tenacious and uncommon!

The company is currently set to premier their new work ALKHAWF in February 2018. This is the first of a trilogy about metabolizing fear. In Alkhawf (meaning fear in Arabic), dancers will acknowledge their fears and in doing so pull the audience into their psyche, using physical movements, complex partner work, elaborate props and live projection; a multi disciplinary production. The second and third pieces, Muajahat Alkhawf and Bila Khawf, speak to facing and living without fear and will premier in 2019 as a three-part evening length work.

ALKHAWF has already captured the attention of festivals locally and abroad in both the dance and music community. With an original score being composed by Autumn Nicholas, this work is not only relatable but extremely personal and complex. At the beginning of the research process, the dancers were heavily interviewed and asked to step outside their comfort zones to share their personal experiences with fear. This has been the propulsion to creating a work that will captivate audiences on a relatable and powerful scale.

Autumn has been involved through the entirety of the process thus far. Her impetus for her composition has derived from specific wording and images created by the dancers descriptions of their personal fears.

Additionally, Autumn will be producing a single that takes listeners  on a journey through the extreme moments and hardships that one experiences when awknoledging and facing their fears. This single titled CAUTION, will be released at the ALKHAWF debut in February. The full score from the show will also be available on this demo album.

However, with travel, performance and original music, comes a hefty cost... As Courtney OM never expected such rapid momentum, the company is seeking supports to aid in the growth of the company fundamentally and allow for stability in the propulsion of new work!

Ultimately the funds that we will raise will benefit the company in more ways than just one. The finance manager would allocate and distribute the funds raised towards: Significant dancer pay, food stipends, company travel, lodging, theater rentals, costuming, sound production and lighting equipment, to name a few.

Courtney OM has currently been covering all the encompassing costs of the company independently, including opening a training facility and home for the dancers; Threehouse Studios.

Originally, she envisioned OM grown dancers as being an independent project, however with the talent and dedication of the dancers it quickly catapulted into a greater entity!

A note from Courtney OM:

The funds raised would ground my new work in North Carolina and let me invest in relationships within the Durham community that would outlast the fundraising’s revenue flow. OM grown dancers and Durham are both on the up and up, but this fundraiser could determine whether they grow together! Though I love that my choreography has elicited that support, I see potential for projects that are larger than what I can independently fund. At this point in my career, I have the expertise and momentum to execute my artistic vision.

With every performance, my company grows as a choreographic landscape. This is the first time I have had unfettered access to a group of educated, eager dancers to execute my vision. Our performances resonate with audiences--this is proven by the overwhelming support we’ve received from the Raleigh/Durham community in fully funding our first company debut!

Your support will ultimately help enrich the Durham arts community and the possibilities for OM grown dancers to continue our creative journey and travels. The company is excited about the possibility of traveling internationally on a greater scale. The caliber of my work is continually on the climb and there are no intentions of stopping anytime soon!

Myself and my OMIES are grateful and extremely thankful that you have taken the time to ready this story. We hope you will consider contributing to our vision and providing greater possibilities for this art to be seen.

Sincerely,
OM grown dancers & OM grown dancers Management
