What the support will mean

As an African American  and lifetime resident of the South Side of Chicago, I have been continually involved in my community.  I know needs of the under-resourced youth that have desire and resiliency for their dreams, yet need the guidance to get there. For some time, I have held on to the "each one teach one" train of thought. I know that apart of living in my purpose is through giving back what God has given me; a higher education,  various opportunities and a career with a positive outlook.

Bottomline, there is a shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) in the US. This is due to many reasons such as the amount of Baby-boomers retiring, the low amount of nurses that serve as educators (whom are also retiring), nursing school waiting lists, and  youth that unaware or unexposed to nursing as a career path. Furthermore, of the 2,824,641  (RNs) in the US, "9.9% of RN's are black or African American. "

When we look at  minority health statistics , there is a great disparity in Blacks in terms of diseases such as cancer, diabetes,  obesity, stroke, HIV, smoking and asthma. What  do you believe would happen if the underrepresented Black women and men  from areas of economical and/or educational disadvantage became registered nurses and educated and empowered their families and communities?

BACKGROUND:
Chicago, IL | Founded in 2017 , NursingInspired is  a mentorship and educational program  for ethnically underrepresented  moreover African American youth  high school students & young adults that seek to pursue a higher education & nursing career.

This program was created with the inspiration from a seminar course that I have created  and taught since 2015 called:  “Nursing…Yesterday, Today and Your Tomorrow!”

My course has provided five cohorts of high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with college preparation as well as informational tools to apply to nursing school.

This program can provide exposure to a career outlook in nursing for high school students only and furthermore, for those whose families can afford the opportunity.

I have come to realize that there are many students,  that cannot afford or are applicable to attend my course, yet still deserve to be inspired.

Therefore, the purposeful intention of NursingInspired, is to capture not only high school students, but young adults that have taken or will be taking  prerequisites to apply to nursing school.

Furthermore, my program is specifically geared to inspire and assist African American and other ethnically underrepresented and otherwise economically  or educationally disadvantaged students.

This therein promotes diversity in nursing, which is reflective of many patients receiving care.  The end-product is not only diversity, additionally NursingInspired produces future leaders in healthcare.
