Last summer, I visited Nepal to participate in volunteer work at the New Culture School in Hetauda, Nepal. This is a secondary program to support poor children in remote villages, operated by the local churches.

The children in these villages often need educational support, as their schools often require long commutes. Further, their parents are usually too busy to provide proper care and influence, resulting in a recurring cycle of poverty due to poor education.



The New Culture School was established in Hetuada, Nepal about three years ago (2013), in order to provide an after-school program to children from poor villages. The school is focused on raising the importance of education, in order to persuade children to care about and attend their primary schools.

Currently, there are six Nepali teachers at the school. During the volunteer program, I helped develop an English program, as well as arts and crafts projects. Where possible, I also tried to step in and make additional improvements to the school as a whole.

At the end of the program, I collected a wish list from the teachers, so I could continue helping after my trip. One notable item was to provide notebooks to the children attending this program -- many of them don't have enough money to afford basic supplies. The teachers believe that having proper school supplies should help motivate some kids into regularly attending school.

The money raised from this campaign will be sent to the New Culture School in Hetauta, Nepal. The school will purchase notebooks and distribute them to the children attending its program, as well as to those who don't attend any regular school.
