Police Officer Noah Leotta “Act Responsibly Scholarship”
Noah Leotta had fulfilled his dream. After graduating from Sherwood High School in Olney, Maryland, and attending Montgomery College, he became an intern with the County Police Department. He was hired as a Police Officer Candidate in January 2013, and six months later became a patrol officer in the 4th District, which includes Olney. Officer Leotta was passionate about keeping communities safe, with particular focus on getting drug and alcohol impaired drivers off the roads. He wanted to reduce DUI dangers, so Noah asked for an assignment with the Montgomery County Holiday Alcohol Task Force. Ironically, he became a victim.
On December 3, 2015, Officer Leotta was on duty at a Task Force checkpoint. After a random screening he was walking back to his vehicle when a drunk driver ran off the road, smashed into his cruiser, and then struck Officer Leotta. For a week he remained in critical condition, heroically fighting for his life. On December 10 he succumbed to his injuries. Noah was just 24-years old.
To commemorate his life and legacy, the Olney Chamber of Commerce has established the Police Officer Noah Leotta “Act Responsibly Scholarship”. Students pursuing careers in public safety or law enforcement are eligible for 1 – 4 year scholarships, in annual amounts beginning at $1,000. Applicants will be evaluated on academic performance, leadership, civic and volunteer activities. Each applicant will be asked to document their belief in, and commitment to, the ideals embodied by Officer Leotta.
