Hello,

Family, friends, and soon-to-be friends. As some of you may already know, my name is Nicole Bratcher-Bouyer and I am a junior TV/Film major at Howard University.

I have always been more than willing to work hard for what I want and there is nothing I want more than to continue my education at Howard University. I am an independent student paying my own way through college due in part to my mother suffering from a stroke that left her with a left-side paralysis my sophomore year of high school. Since then I have triumphed over poverty and homelessness and remained ambitious and steadfast in my pursuit of a higher education and promising future. Fortunately, I have been able to excel in school and within my community. Specifically at Howard University.

Howard University has been my gateway to many invaluable opportunities to grow within myself and my community. At Howard, I have expanded upon my leadership skills and exercised my love for community service on a higher level than I have ever imagined.

At Howard University, I am the co-founder of GoFundTheMecca, a student-led group dedicated to helping students find opportunities to alleviate their student debt. It could be easy to spend time only worrying about my tuition expenses, however, I work with volunteers to come up with ways to combat other student's tuition problems.

As well, I am a member of the Society of Young Revolutionaries, an organization dedicated to the empowerment of people of African descent.

I give back to the youth as a tutor for DC Reads Tutoring Program where I help 6th - 8th graders in Math, Spanish, and Reading.

As well, Howard University has allotted me the opportunity to participate in Alternative Spring Break, a free weeklong volunteer opportunity. With Alternative Spring Break, I traveled down to New Orleans to mentor children in the charter schools, speak with youth at juvenile detention centers, service the 9th Ward food desert, and study ways to end the school to prison pipeline. Opportunities like these which Howard University has offered to me have been stepping stones to my emergence as a community service leader.

One of my greatest accomplishments at Howard University has been creating and coordinating #1000WaterBottles, an initiative started to hydrate at-risk citizens in the District during a severe weeklong heatwave. For the entire week leading up to the first day of classes, I and other dedicated volunteers spent time walking the streets of DC passing out ice cold waters to the homeless, youth, and senior citizens. We were able to reach beyond our goal of 1,000 water bottles and spread awareness on even the smallest issues that can affect homeless citizens on a greater level!

In between classes and giving back to the community, I have been paying my own tuition since my freshman year. For the most part, I have been doing well in handling it on my own. However, due to a class credit issue that prompted an unexpected reduction in my student loans, I have run into a financial balance that I am having much trouble overcoming on my own.

A couple of weeks before the Fall 2016 semester came to a close, I was informed that all students with outstanding balances for the semester must either pay their balance and register for at least 12 credits or vacate their dorm rooms by December 14, 2016. I reached out to all my resources in financial aid, but to no avail have I been able to clear the balance. However, Howard has given me until January 6, 2017, to clear the balance to keep my University housing.

I have opted out of a Christmas break with family at home in Chicago and am instead staying in the DMV area to work. However, I am afraid that the limited work hours and limited time until January 6th will not be enough to clear the balance in time to secure my University housing back and ultimately clear my financial hold to allow me to register for Spring 2017.

My current balance is $3,500! I have set the GoFundMe goal to $4,000 to allow for all GoFundMe fees. I am asking for any and all individuals who can help to please donate however much they can to help me stay at Howard University!

Furthermore, with my degree I will create my own television network that produces content that allows all viewers to look on screen and see a positive image of themselves. With the money I make through my television network, I would like to open non-profits for children with disabled parents, homeless shelters, and safe homes for orphaned children, to name a few.

I know the journey to my Howard University degree will be full of trials and tribulations, but I am determined to make it through, ON TIME! I know that with the help of generous family, friends, and soon-to-be friends, the journey will be a bit easier!

Thank you in advance!
