Veterinary Medicine Aspiration

Donation protected

My name is Nicholas Hanley and I'm pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine. I have always told my parents about my dream profession of being a "dog doctor"; then later realizing the correct terminology was Veterinarian. I believe it will be a rewarding experience, after I finish college and obtain my degree. I've always had an exceptional love and inquisitive mind for animals. I was a proud owner of a fourteen-year-old golden retriever.

Paige was a part of the family ever since she was a small golden of 8 weeks old. We were inseparable ever since I was 8 years old. Tragically her young life was cut short from a tumor that was found in her stomach, which blocked her digestive tract. Paige will eternally have a special place in my heart and I will continue to remember the times we used to talk about anything. Her presence has been greatly missed in my family.

To continue, my family is an interesting "Caribbean Mix" because my father's side is from Panama and my mother's from Jamaica. However, there was a significant event that shattered the dynamics of the family. In the beginning of my junior year of high school, March 8th 2009, my father succumbed to a rare pancreatic cancer, after being diagnosed and bedridden for only ten weeks. It was a devastating blow, academically, emotionally, physically and to my extracurricular activities. While my father was ill, he told me, "…To be strong and to never give up, Big guy." He was an extraordinary person, who placed an importance on my education. It has been increasingly difficult financially, without my father's income; however, my mother, God and myself have each other to lean on when times are tough. As I attend Florida Atlantic University, I reflect on my past experiences at Broward College. I had the amazing opportunity to be elected as the Student Government President and to have the privilege to manage a group of great student leaders. In my presidential term of 2012-2013, I was fortunate to see my administration and I implemented changes that had a monumental benefit for Broward College on an eco-friendly standpoint. Our efforts and our voices help to bring the first Solar Powered Picnic Table to Broward College. This tool has helped students to charge their mobile devices, and other electronics while being underneath a shady area from the sun. In addition, as the solar panels charge in the daytime, it provides illumination at night.

Through my plethora of experiences and networking skills I have developed with others, I will continue to utilize my newfound abilities and by the grace of God fight for my dreams.
