UPDATE: New Goal -

I just did the numbers, we will be able to take 180 students with the current amount. Looking to hit that 200 mark for real AND purchase a drink and popcorn for each child that will cost $5 per child if we cannot make that goal, helping to offset some of the cost would be great. I really feel that we can make it though. Please keep sharing.

Additional 20 seats at 6.50 per child will be $130
Popcorn and a drink for 200 children will equal $1,000.

Grand total minimum needed for 200 students is $2,195.

We are helping them to make memories, they will also receive in addtion to the bus ride, movie, drink and popcorn, a commemorative book that shares how their day was, it will include all of their comments that they made about the movie, photos of the trip, and other things to help them remember the day.

Original story below:

If you all haven't heard yet, the Marvel Black Panther movie will be released soon...we are thrilled to have this movie finally hit the big screen. There is a nation wide movement - the Black Panther Challenge- to have as many of our youth see this movie as possible so that they are finally able to see themselves in a movie, so they can finally have their own heroes to look up to.  To quote an article from Vice by Noel Ransome "The film that features an almost all-black cast, a black director, and is set in a world that portrays people of color in a superior light is something black people have never seen before...in an age when black people are seeing wrongs done against them in ways that extend beyond film every day, a moment to see blackness as a strength means everything. "

Sankofa Community Connection wants to lead a Black Panther Challenge, locally for our children in Newport. In order to make this happen, we need your support. We have a short amount of time to raise the funds to secure our screening time.  On Monday, February 12th I will be able to reserve the space for us to see the movie on the last Sunday of Black History Month, hoping to get the theater secured for their only available time slot on Sunday 2-25-18 in the morning.

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

$350 will reserve the movie theater so that we can all see it together  and includes 50 tickets.  We want to take at least 50 youth to be a part of this. For additional tickets beyond the 50 it will cost $6.50 each, that is still way below the cost of a regular ticket.

WHO WILL GET THE TICKETS?

Those 50 tickets included, will go to middle school students in Newport.  As a part of them getting a free ticket, we are asking them to write a short essay, or a few sentences on why seeing this movie is important to them or ask them why they enjoyed the movie after the screening. We would like to see how this movie impacts them before and after. ***We will have chaperones attend along with us, in case some students aren't able to come with their parents and they will pay $6.50 for their own admission to the movie, additionally, if parents would like to see this with their child as a part of this group, they will also pay their $6.50 to get in.***

WHAT IF MORE THAN $350 IS RAISED?

It would be AMAZING !!! :)

Anything raised over the $350 will go to additional ticket purchase and possibly refreshments for the students during the movie. Depending on the amount.

I am working on local organizations to see if we could get help with transportation so that it can be accessible to all that want to be there.

Please donate and share, every little bit helps us get towards our goal of bringing the Black Panther Challenge to Newport, RI.
