Hey there! My name is Nailah and I'm currently a student at Brooklyn College majoring in Africana studies with a double minor in journalism and political science. The Africana studies department offers a study abroad program to Ghana which exposes students to the culture, history, economy, politics, and development of Ghana. We will begin in Accra, Ghana where we will visit cultural and historical sights such as The DuBois Center, the National Museum, and the National Art Center. We will also travel to Kumasi, the center of the Ashanti culutural region where we will take a music and dance workshop with Asante folklorist, Agya Koo Nimo and attend lectures with Ghanaian professors at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. We'll also visit the Kakum Canopy walk as well as coastal slave forts in Cape Coast. The program lasts for approximately four weeks and runs from July 13th, 2017 to August 17th, 2017.

Now that I've provided you with some background, on to the important question, why do I want to study in Ghana? Glad you asked :)...

I come from a line of educators, writers, and preachers. Activism and a passion for social justice is in my blood. I plan on breaking into the industry of radio broadcast and using my platform to educate the world, specifically my community, on political and social issues that affect minorities in urban communities. At the same time I want to work to reform education policies and teach History/Social Studies because children are the future and they will be the ones to bring this generations plans to change the world to fruition. Going to Ghana will increase my knowledge of the effect the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade had on both American-Africans and African countries politically and socially as well as provide me with global experience which is vital in developing a well-rounded scope of politics.

How can you help?
DONATING. Currently, we're $1585 away from the goal of $2200. If 40 people give $40, that's the remainder right there! All it takes is 40 people. Not everyone has to donate $40, every little bit counts! $1, $2, $5, $10...it all adds up!

In addition, for all of my donors, I have something in store for each and every one of you! I will be sending weekly video updates from Ghana letting you know what I've done for the week, who I've met, possibly a sample of the dance worskhop, thanking you once again, and showing you bits and pieces of Ghana's beauty.

Thank you for taking out the time to visit my GoFundMe page, even if you're not able to donate, pass it along, share it on social media, and maybe someone you know can!

I will be accepting donations here until the middle of May as this will be used to pay for airfare as well as the program fees. Any further donations and/or questions feel free to email me at:

Thanks guys! :)
