Send a Muskoka Child to Summer Camp

Help make the sun shine a little brighter for kids in Muskoka!

In 2011, Muskoka Community Services started a new program to fund a week of summer camp for children whose parents were unable to afford such an expense. We worked with families in receipt of social assistance, families with children who have special needs and families who work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

The response to our summer camp funding program was beyond positive and in 2012 word spread to such an extent that we had to start turning families away.

Since then, families have sent their kids to overnight camps and day camps. They have sent their kids to sports camps, arts camps, canoe camps, music camps, outdoor camps,  and horseback riding camps. They have sent children as young as 4 and as old as 17. And every family says the same thing  - kids love the experience of getting away from home, trying new things and making new friends. Kids return home with more self-confidence, stories to share and smiles on their faces. Kids come home saying it was the BEST SUMMER EVER (yes, they say it every year!).

Each summer Muskoka Community Services is able to send almost 200 kids from vulnerable and low-income families to camp. The problem is, although our budget doesn't increase each year, the interest in summer camp does. Every year we have to turn away more and more families and, quite frankly, it breaks our heart each and every time we have to tell an eager parent this bad news.

In order to stretch our budget, we have partnered with camps across Muskoka to secure discounts, and camps have been more than happy to help (thank you to our camp partners!). Unfortunately, there is a limit to the amount of discounts any camp can provide. Now we are reaching out to you for help. On average, it costs less than $550 per week to send a child to a local summer camp (day camps cost less, about $150 on average and overnight camps more, about $800 on average).

We know Muskoka is a place where children should be swimming, paddling, playing, making friends and enjoying their summer. We also know Muskoka is full of generous people who want the best for our future and for our children. Please consider donating today! Every dollar counts and is greatly appreciated. If you are unable to make a donation, you can still help! Please spread the word by sharing this post with your friends on Facebook and Twitter!

Thank you for your support - your generosity has made the sun shine a little brighter for every child in Muskoka!
