Help Save Our Dolphin

Thanks to the generous commitment of Jody & Jamie Davis of the Rosalie Ellen Company, the iconic Miramar Park "Dolphin" statue will be refurbished! It is now up to us, the locals, to finish the job. With donations from the community, we hope to replace the rubber surface on which the statue sits, ensuring that generations to come will be able to enjoy this wonderful space at Miramar Park overlooking the Pacific.
As many of you know, this original "Dolphin" statue was installed sometime between 1983 and 1984, shortly after the park was developed. The revered statue has been a magnet for climbing kids, a photographic attraction for children and families, as well as a location for memorial services. However, due to decades of use and exposure to the elements, the "Dolphin" has begun to deteriorate, making it unsafe. In addition, the rubber surface beneath the dolphin is in dire need of replacement.
In hopes of finding a remedy, the City has spent countless hours searching archives and making phone calls in hopes of finding the original "Dolphin" manufacturer, to no avail. Looking for help from the community, John Jones, Director of the Community Services Department for the City of Torrance, held an informal meeting at Miramar Park in early June, 2017. Over 50 citizens attended and made it clear that the "Dolphin", as it was originally built, must be saved. Jody & Jamie Davis immediately stepped up and committed to fixing the "Dolphin" - we thank them for this generosity. The rubber surface below the statue, however, needs funding.
In an effort to raise the funds needed to keep the "Dolphin" structure as it currently exists we have established a GoFundMe page. Several bids had been taken into consideration with regards to the safety of the surface and its longevity. The winning bid amount was $8,840.30, however, with GoFundMe fees taken into account, we need to raise roughly $9,850 (this will be the cap). The City is well aware of our efforts and look forward to our success. Please consider donating any amount you feel appropriate to bring back our "Dolphin" so that future generations can enjoy the park as much as we did.
**Update per GoFundMe guidelines: We have reached our goal. A non interest bearing bank account will be opened at Opus Bank in the Riviera Village for the desposit of all the donations received. The restoration of the dolpin and the area surrounding it will become an agenda item for the Torrance City Council in the next few weeks. I will present the City of Torrance a check on behalf of the community for these repairs.
