We are a charitable organization that was founded in memory of our daughter Mira River Dunsmore. Mira had an undiagnosed rare genetic disease her entire life. In December 2014 at 9 and a half years old she passed away from complications due to this disease. Even though the years were not near enough for any of us, we did everything we could to enable her (& us) to have a life full of love, laughter, adventure, and joy.
Despite the amazing supports our family received in the medical community, we struggled financially for many years while trying to mantain a balance between family life and medical expenses . As a parent, the last thing you want is to be unable to provide stability and joy to your children during otherwise confusing and difficult times. Unfortunately, those are the things that are threatened when dealing with financial burdens that accompany a child’s long term medical issue.
After Mira's passing we founded this organization to help families just like our own. MiraBE’s mission is to help affected families that have no support from existing foundations or charities, better cope with the burdens associated with their child’s illness and to promote ‘regular family life’.
Our current focus is to assist families recieving medical care from London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) through a variety of means, including parking passes and meal vouchers. With a large Pediactric Care Unit, LHSC provides for many local families and was Mira's home base for medical care. As we grow we hope to expand to include many other children’s health centres.
We have formed a board, hold regular meetings, and had several grassroots events with the amazing support of family, friends, & community partners. Our application for charitable status has been completed and we are now waiting on the government approval. As many of us know government processes are rarely short, so while we are waiting for our charitable status, we would like to start helping families right away!
Therefore we want to kick off 2016 by raising $16,000!! Every dollar raised will go towards completing our goal of buying 100 day parking passes for every month of 2016. That's 100 families we will not only be helping with a parking pass, but a 100 families we will be establishing a relationship with that we can continue to assist into the future. Every dollar helps, donate today!
