A Forever Home for Sunshine Horses

Help Sunshine Horses find a permanent home of our own!

Who are we

Sunshine Horses, Inc. is a 501(c) nonprofit horse adoption agency and resuce in Syracuse, NY.  Since our founding in 2003 by Kate Starr, we have found homes for over 150 horses. Most of these horses are retired harness racehorses; however we are open to all breeds needing homes in Central New York. We also work with neglected, abused and rescued horses from all backgrounds. We are the largest Standardbred adoption facility in New York State.

Over the past year we have taken several standardbreds from kill pens in the Northeast. These horses faced a very grim fate, one that is a reality for over 150,000 horses annually. They would have gone to slaughter had it not been for good networking and places like Sunshine for them to go.

Our herd is also composed of a few special needs horses; who for whatever reason are not rideable and very difficult to adopt out. We are looking to expand into being a sanctuary for these horses as well and to provide them with the safest and most comfortable environment to retire in.

Now, after 14 years, Sunshine Horses is looking for its own forever home.
We currently lease a property in Central Square, NY but per our landlord are limited in the types of improvements we can do, as well as in space. Our barn has 25 permanent stalls and 9 moveable stalls. There are only 20 or so available acres for an average of 30 horses, most of which is now dirt/mud lot and rocky. Winters in Central Square are particularly cold and snowy, making it hard for our volunteers to make it out and harder for our horses to move about. Summers are hot and humid (And full of flies).

Sunshine Horses, Inc. has been growing since we started. Our first years saw  a dozen horses or less per year. Now in 2017 we have over 30 horses in our care at any given time.

We typically have over 20 horses adopted each year.

And while we have been raising awareness for retired standardbred racehorses; it has become apparent, now more than ever, that we need a bigger and better facility.

Our program receives daily inquiries from racing owners and trainers, local people who can't keep their horses, and rescue groups who want to pull slaughter bound Standardbreds who wish to send their horses to us, but due to limited space and funding, not all horses can be accepted. We also take back horses who left our program, but for one reason or another cannot stay at the homes they were adopted to. Sudden life changes for several horses this year have brought them back to our barn; more than in the past. These horses are our responsibility too. This means we have had to turn away some horses, and do our best to list others as incoming, all while waiting for the next adoption and open stall.

How Can You Help?
The money raised in this fund will go directly towards purchasing a property where we can continue our high standards of care for these amazing retired athletes. We want to give them more space to roam, a safe and cozy barn to sleep in at night and a place where those who can be retrained will be able to have the most consistent, quality work on a regular schedule.

We also want to be able to provide a better space for our volunteers. We have a great number of people who have had to stop volunteering at our current location as it is too far to regularly get to. We also have lost some after we moved up to our current location from the State Fairgrounds. We miss them and want them to come back! A closer location to the city of Syracuse will also provide us with more access to local volunteer groups, such as 4-H and girl and boy scout troops.

Your donations will be used for the down payment and further purchase of a permanent location for our organization.

The sooner we raise funds, the better!

This is a big challenge, but one that we know can be successful with everyone's help. The people of Sunshine Horses will be grateful to have a top notch place for our horses until they find forever homes. And of course our horses will be grateful for a soft place to land!

Remember that this is ALL for the horses’ benefit. Sunshine wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for them. They are what bind us all together, and their needs rise far above the needs of any one person here. We want them to have the best farm and life possible as they wait for their forever homes.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts and hooves.
