Michael's Road to Recovery

Hi All! My name is Rachel and I have created this Fundraiser page because Amy, a friend and co-worker of mine needs our help! Recently her 14 year old son Michael, under went not one, but two major brain surgeries within a two week period.   
     It all started on April 21st when Michael complained of a bad headache.  Soon they would go to the Dr where he was diagnosed with a bad sinus infection and given antibiotics.  However, less than a week later Michael started to loose feeling in his left foot that eventually would spread throughout his left side. They were quickly sent off to Essentia in Duluth where an MRI was to be done right away. The results showed a subdural empyema had occurred.  This means that his sinus infection had been so severe that it caused his sinus to rupture and spread a bacterial infection throughout his brain.  He was quickly air lifted to Children's Hospital where an emergency surgery to remove the infection would be done upon arriving.  Luckily the surgery went well and he was discharged 7 days later.  Upon Michael's return home, he would be given antibiotics through a PICC line IV, attend physical therapy and be under strict watch. Things seemed to be going good, until Michael started to loose feeling again in his left side less than two weeks later. He was rushed to the hospital where another MRI was done. The results showed more infection and he was once again air lifted to Children's for yet another emergency surgery.  Thankfully, the second surgery went well and he was able to return home with his family 5 days later.
     Michael was given more antibiotics with a stronger dosage as a result from the second surgery.  He will have labs done twice a week and an MRI done every other for the next 6 to 8 weeks. Michael received 69 staples total from the two surgeries. He was able to have them all removed this past Wednesday (5/16).        
     The road to recovery has now begun for Michael but it won't be an easy one as there is a chance the infection could return. Michael's medications alone, cost over 100 dollars a day. His medications along with frequent Dr visits and the medical bills piling up etc, they could really use our help! Even a $5 donation would make all the difference and help us towards reaching our goal!
