Miami Punk Rock High Reunion
Hi, my name is Richard Shelter.
> As a lot of you know, I founded the Cameo Theater as a music venue in the 80s. I also created Flynn’s on the Beach, 27 Birds in Coconut Grove & The Blitz in Hialeah. Back then I produced hundreds of concerts by rock, punk, new wave & alternative bands from all over the world. And I gave exposure to almost all the original bands of Miami at that time…
> Now my friends & I are working on a screenplay & book project about “Life in Miami in the 80s” and the 80s Miami music scene. We want to tell the story of what it was like to live in that empty pastel ghost town. And to tell that story through the eyes of some of the amazing characters that passed thru that city at that time.
AND > ALL OF YOU WHO WERE THERE <
ALL OF YOU will provide the anecdotes, the dialogue & the stories of 80s Miami.
We are asking for crowd funding contributions to do the following:
First > create an archive office with a small staff for a few months to do web design, scanning and archiving ALL of our memorabilia into ONE DEFINITIVE SITE. Something that will continue to grow & be there for years to come.
Second > produce a major Reunion Weekend next year April 1st & 2nd of next year, with multiple events:
> Storytellers Night
> 80s Club Night
> Cameo Punk Reunion Night
HELP US MAKE ALL THIS POSSIBLE.
HELP US PRESERVE THE HISTORY OF THAT VERY REMARKABLE TIME.
> We will offer 'Limited Edition' MIAMI PUNK ROCK HIGH T-shirts & stickers, actual 80s tickets & memorabilia, and ADVANCE TICKETS to the reunion shows as a thank you for your contribution.

> Thank You <
If you know me, you know that I've always been a little “overly ambitious” when it comes to the projects I undertake. I have always been this way, going back to the eighties, trying to do big shows on a limited budget. But one way or another, I would always find the financing to create the club, venue or show that our scene wanted. We always kept the ticket prices low and we always paid our local bands well. We didn’t always break even & we lost money on big shows many times. But I think you all know that I felt that it was important to do the right thing back then and I still feel that way today…
Therefore you must know that it's humbling to do a public pronouncement such as this one...
> When we started this project a few months ago Rob Elba (Holy Terrors, Shark Valley Sisters), Rich Ulloa (Yesterday & Today Records) and I had long discussions about what we're trying to accomplish and how much to ask for from the public. We understood that there was “crowdfunding fatigue” out there. We knew that people were tired of contributing to creative projects that would bear little fruit. (80 grand for a Churchill’s documentary that never happened, for example) This is why we set our Target amount to a modest $10,000 to cover the costs of setting up an archive, producing a reunion and starting the work on a book and screenplay…
I had a lot of ambitious ideas for the months leading up to our reunion: staffing an archive office, doing a podcast, filming all three shows, even the idea of flying in a major eighties punk artist to headline the Cameo reunion. If we had hit our Target of $10,000, these were all things we had planned to do. But now we realize that the Archive, Book and Screenplay projects will have to be financed later and separately through different means...
Therefore > I intend to put all my energies over the next two months into making this Reunion something that we could all be proud of. And to use this opportunity, through interviews & original writing, to collect the stories and anecdotes needed for all the creative projects down the road…
>> One thing I want to make very clear: this project was never intended simply to be an “exercise in nostalgia” but a way to collect together the stories of that time into one database. Miami Punk Rock High is intended to be the “research portion” of the larger creative projects to come…
I still believe that we have a unique story to tell the world about Life in Miami in the 80s. After the reunion is over, I intend to pursue this story into a screenplay, a book, a graphic novel, etc, and an archive is still needed to accomplish all this. Later this year, either with my own money (or with grant or sponsorship money) we will get all of this done….
We want to thank everyone who is given their support to our GoFundMe campaign so far.
We have done everything we could do with the funding received already: Operational costs for the first 2 months, artwork, T-shirts, Website design and setting up an archiving office. (Equipment, scanners, tables etc) Everything is set up & ready to go, but we simply do not have the funding to continue at this time. We have gone as far as we could with the money that's been provided so far…
Please Remember: everyone who contributes will get their t-shirts, stickers and other swag as soon as Chuck Loose and Iron Forge Press get set up in their new location. Everyone who contributes will get credit on the Archive itself once it is built. AND I still intend to do one or two special private events for the major contributors to our GoFundMe campaign during that weekend…
We will make this Reunion the most fun weekend ever..!!
And collect the stories we need for all the creative projects to come...
Thank you again for your support…
