My Sun's book : Metrix of the Wind

Donation protected
As a homeschooling mom, I had to look for creative ways to keep my 11 year old sun(son) interested in reading. Reading can be very boring at times when you aren’t reading things that you’re interested in even as an adult. He enjoyed books about superheroes. Our favorite thing to do together is watch superhero movies. Christian has always loved art. As a young college mom, there were plenty days where I had to take him to classes with me. I would give him an art project to keep him busy and quiet while in lecture halls and during homework time. He had speech delays at an early age and art became a way for him to express himself. There was a time, around age 4, where every wall in our apartment was covered in his art work.

One day, while reading a book about superheroes, Christian became very uninterested and it dawned on me, to take my effects to keep him interested a little further! I closed the book and asked, “how about you create your own superhero? He replied by asking with uncertainty, “how am I going to do that?” In my mommy voice I said with love, “Christian you are an amazing artist! You are so talented! You can do anything you put your mind to, and I’ll help you!” My sun smiled with excitement and that day Metrix was born.

While researching the Costs, honestly, I became afraid myself. I thought of every reason not to start this fundraiser, and I put it off for a while. Then I realized that I want my sun know how important it is to chase his dreams. All OF THEM! No matter how big. All kids need to know that they can do ANYTHING they put their minds to. A little boy who struggled with reading and speech can make a superhero that will inspire the world. Most importantly, I didn't want to place my worldly adult fears and barriers on my sun so I had to remove them from myself.

One of the characters is his grandfather who turned 85 this year. Below is the partial transcript for part 1 of the Metrix series:

1. Electrie Chapman lives a normal life. He lives at home with his mother Victoria Marie chapman and his grandpa Marvie Chapman. They live together in a little house in the very windy city of Chicago.

2. By day, Electrie is a Chicago police officer and volunteer firefighter. He works to keep the people of Chicago safe by rescuing people from dangerous fires and keeping bad guys off the streets.

3. When he is not busy fighting fires, Electrie teaches young boys in the city how to behave like young men. He is a mentor. The young boys really look up to Electrie. On Saturday mornings, he takes his boys out to the park for a game of baseball. Their time is called the Warriors.

4. Electrie is an awesome role model for the young men. After the baseball games, Electrie gives each boy a surprise gift from his superhero mega bag. The boys are always excited about their gifts. Sometimes its candy, sometimes its books, and other times they have even gotten action figures. There is one thing that Electrie never leaves home without packing in his bag, belts! Electrie keeps belts in his bag to give to the young men to make sure that their pants fit properly.

5. There are always bad guys committing crimes in the city. Those bad guys frighten the kids in the neighborhood.

6. As a young child, Electrie learned that he had very special powers. Electrie can control the wind. Having such a special gift, Electrie always felt different from the rest of the children. He could never fit in with the rest of the children, but Electrie knew he was special, and that being different was a good thing. His mother taught him that.

7. He did not let it keep him from having fun, playing sports, and loving school. His favorite subject was art. He was a very talented artist. When Electrie grew up, he knew that he had to use his gifts to help change the world around him.

8. Chicago has a lot of crime and bad guys. So by night Electrie becomes Metrix! Metrix is an awesome superhero who fights crime in the city of Chicago and helps the police keep the community safe.

9. It is easy for Metrix to get to the crime scene fast to stop the bad guys when he uses his super wind speed. It’s almost like he can teleport himself. Metrix can move as fast as a category 5 hurricane!

10. Metrix saves the children in Chicago from being harmed by bad guys. The children in Chicago can play all day outside and sleep soundly at night because Metrix is there to protect them.

After reading Metrix to friends and family, we got really good critiques and feedback. Most people wanted to see Metrix develop into a movie or series. Very wishful thinking! Hopefully it will become a reality. Our plan is travel to different places to tell the world about Metrix. We’re going to travel to different states, and while doing so, we’ll learn about the different things each state has to offer. We’ll search for historical sites, national parks, museums, and theme parks. Maybe we’ll even travel outside the country.

Chicago is on different news stations all around the U.S. for its extremely high murder rates. While traveling, Christian will be learning about the world outside of Illinois while showing others that Chicago has more to offer than a high crime rate. Chicago has superheroes!
