Help Young Women Attend Girls State

Donation protected
Fund the attendance of two deserving female high school students to the annual ALA Volunteer Girls State Leadership Conference the week of May 28th-June 3rd, 2017.

This year the VGS staff have kindly created two additional openings for delegates from Memphis public high schools.  The opportunity to send two young women without the sponsorship of an ALA chapter are special. To ensure we adequately represent the strongest and most deserving student leaders of Memphis, delegates were nominated by fellow teachers at Title 1 schools.

Volunteer Girls State (VGS) is a nonpartisan program, centered on citizenship, teamwork, and fostering a love of state government and active citizenship. It takes place annually at Lipscomb University in Nashville and hosts over 550 of Tennessee’s rising female high school seniors each year.

In order for these two students to attend, we need to raise $700 which includes the cost of the VGS conference fee for two students ($350 x 2).

The VGS conference this year will include Governor Haslam as a speaker as well as the opportunity to view the TN Supreme Court decide a real case. The VGS delegates will also learn about local, county, and state government, partake in mock elections and learn how bills are written. This week-long, residential camp fosters leaders through elections, choir, debates, athletics, theater, guest lectures and more.

Please help fund the attendance of two deserving students to represent SCS at the VGS conference on May 28th. These two girls are highly motivated, well-spoken leaders in their respective high schools and this experience would ground them in their effort of realizing their full college and career potential.  Right now, only 16% of the Tennessee legislature are women and creating this pipeline for young female leaders to engage with governmental officals and current events can change that statistic in the near future.

If you're unable to donate, you could help by sharing this information with your network.  Updates about our delegates´ experiences to come.

Thank you for helping our girls get there!
