Save UWM's Mellencamp Film Archives

Donation protected
The Moving Image Society is fundraising for our "Save the Archives" campaign! We host the UWM (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) Film Studies Moving Image Archive, including the Patricia Mellencamp* 16mm Print Founding Collection and the Marquette Collection, which together hold over 90 cinema classics and 60 educational and orphan films, in partnership with the UWM Film Studies Program. Over the past year, we have worked hard to preserve these collections and revitalize them through university and community outreach and programming, but we need your help!

The Mellencamp Collection was recently rediscovered in a storage room and subsequently rehoused to the UWM Center for 21st Century Studies. The majority of the films are currently stored in cardboard boxes or in rusty metal cans which can damage the films, and moving the films to appropriate archival storage is necessary to ensure the continued life of the collection. The archival 16mm cans and cores we are fundraising for will give us the tools and equipment necessary to properly archive the collections, while offering students a unique educational opportunity and hands-on archival experience.

We hope to make the archive a public resource to our campus and the community, and aspire to demonstrate an appreciation for film archiving, a lesser known but vital profession within our field, and cultivate student interest in early cinema beyond our program. Your donation will actively ensure that these prints can be used for on-campus and community programming for many years to come!

What will donations be used for?
- archival 16mm cans and cores for storage
- archival film leader for protection
- splicing tape for repair
- film cleaning solution
- gloves, masks, and other supplies
Funds will also be used for general maintenance of equipment.

Our "Save the Archives" campaign will culminate in a benefit screening  on September 20, 2018, in the UWM Union Cinema, a Sundance Institute Art House Project Certified venue, which has remained committed to programming classic, experimental, and independent cinema on celluloid since its founding in 1972. We can't imagine a more appropriate partner in celebrating the inauguration of the archives with us.

We are beyond grateful for any donation, however big or small. Your contribution will make a considerable impact on our continued efforts.

Thank you for your support,
