Hello!

I will be Sarah McG- On - the-Mercy - Ships

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit this page!

I’ve taken up a position as Physiotherapist with the global charity Mercy Ships. This is an unpaid voluntary position.

As of 24th August 2018, I’ll be leaving London and my a job  of almost 3 years and will be living in a confined space ,on board the world’s largest non-governmental HOSPITAL ON A SHIP, the Africa Mercy, for 3 months.

The ship will be in port in Conakry, Guinea, West Africa.

I will not be receiving a working income in this time, but I will be using my Physiotherapy skills on board this ship. I will be carrying out rehabilitation for adults and children post surgery and potentially even those with pre-existing disabilities that have surgery.

What is the goal ....To give back independence and to the upmost as is possible re-integrate individuals back into their communities- to give them a better level playing field.

These Surgeries are locally considered un-treatable!

Surgeries carried out on the ship include
Paediatric orthopaedic surgery i.e. to re-align bony abnormalities from birth effecting ability to walk.
Removing fistulas which have developed after women have gone through the hard work of delivering their babies. The presence of a fistula can causes them to become incontinent.
Removing benign facial tumours that have grown uncontrollably to cause facial restrictions- i.e. causing problems eating or even breathing.
Cleft Palate
Eye surgery
Dental surgery
Ponsetti treatment for clubfeet.

I have wanted to volunteer with the Mercy ships since  all the way back in 2012- but back then I only had 2 years experience as Physiotherapist it wasn't good enough! I was very young...

Now having worked for 8 years as a Physiotherapist and specialising in paediatrics in the last 6 years working in various countries; UK, Peru and Singapore. I believe my skills are now better suited to help children and adults from the community in Guinea.

Help me to physically put these skills to good use.

Help me to give something back by sharing these skills with others who do not have the opportunity to go to university and formally study Physiotherapy.

Help me to learn from the Guineans, and challenge my short sighted world view.

Practically any donations given will help towards monthly accommodation and food, flights, thorough health check, inoculations and medications. If this isn't reason enough to sponsor me :) I will also be running the Hyde Park 10K on Sunday the 5th August.. with a Twist!

I will be running with Molly...... Molly is our 6 month old baby born in the paediatric department of the Royal Free Hospital (my regular work place), she is often used to teach parents how to facilitate movement in their baby and has travelled a lot with this.
Molly will now be joining me in running the 10K via being strapped on in a baby carrier! Please pray for no chaffing ;) and Molly doesn't cry too much.
Women and men will be walking  hours or days to bring their children to the port of Guinea Conakry from their homes to be triaged for surgery. By doing this race in this way- I might just gain a tiny insight into what that could feel like.
I will update you how it feels after!

Thank you if you chose to donate and say something about poverty and health care.
