Michael Jedrzejewski––better known to all of us as MJ––is a writer for film and television, but during the school year, he’s the tennis coach at The Buckley School.
For the last nine years, he’s been coaching the boys and girls tennis teams with Sue Sherman. In fact, as a graduate of The Buckley School himself, he first reconnected with Sue at his 10-year high school reunion, and they’ve been coaching together ever since.
For MJ, coaching tennis has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. He’s remarked that not only does he love the sport of tennis and working with young people, “But to be doing those things in the community that made me, well, me… is truly a blessing and a privilege. Not only do I get to do what I love, but I get to do it with young people whose experiences echo and reflect my own.”
About a year ago, MJ began suffering debilitating vertigo spells and chronic dizziness, equilibrium loss, and headaches. And unfortunately, this July he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The good news is it’s low probability cancerous and there’s a professional medical consensus that removal is not only possible, but at this point, mandatory.
The difficulty now is there are only a handful of neurosurgeons qualified or willing to perform this complicated procedure. And needless to say, despite medical insurance, the costs are staggering. The one neurosurgeon able to perform the surgery has no insurance contracts and is exclusive to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a hospital that MJ’s insurance is unable to contract with.
So he’s forced to pay out of pocket, and essentially, up front.
We’ve started this Go Fund Me campaign to help him pay for surgery, for his hospital stay, for the rehabilitation and recovery, and for whatever next steps lay ahead of him in the fight of his life.

When we told him our plan to begin the campaign, MJ was utterly floored.
All he could say was, “I can’t believe the community that made me… is now going to save me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
