Lovin’ on Lynda ~ Metastatic Breast Cancer #LIFER

Lynda (Ropolewski) Kurdziel, 47 was diagnosed with Stage II B invasive ductal carcinoma. She received this news in October 2008, at age 40 after her first mammogram. After a mastectomy and numerous treatments of radiation and chemotherapy over time, she was cancer free for almost six years.

Lynda has now been diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. Metastatic cancer is a cancer that has spread from the part of the body it originated, to other parts of her body. Unfortunately, this type of cancer is incurable, and the awareness of this type of cancer is almost non-existent. Lynda continues to have chronic pain, as she has regular treatments, chemo, estrogen blocker shots, etc.

She said she’s “up for the fight”. This “fight” is for life, literally, AND for the rest of her LIFE.

We realized the reasons Lynda is “up for the fight”.

Ben, her son, who is a typical bright 18 year old young man, who was diagnosed at an early age with Asperger’s Syndrome (autism), and beautiful 14 year old daughter, Marlee, who is a rock for her Mom ~ or wait, is Mom the rock for Marlee and Ben, and her full time working husband and phenomenal bass player, Dave ‘Nigel’ Kurdziel.

Lynda has a full time job outside of her home that keeps her mind on other things and keeps her feeling somewhat normal, whether she feels good, normal, or numb; she is there, because she’s “up for the fight”.

We, as her friends, are also “up for the fight” to help our friend with additional expenses that insurance can’t and doesn’t cover, which will only become more out of control as her treatments continue, and we do hope that treatments do continue because the alternative is that they don’t. Don’t forget, this diagnosis is incurable, and to us, Lynda is irreplaceable. The daily expenses and medical expenses alone are astronomical, but this Mom also needs to plan for the future of her children, because those kids are the gifts that Lynda is “fighting” for.

Her friends always thought Lynda was a lover, not a fighter, always giving, always the perfect hostess, always doing for everyone, making sure everyone is happy and content ~ and now still “fighting” to be here for everyone else. She is a fabulous person, mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and yes, a strong advocate for the awareness and research of this terrible disease called Metastatic Breast Cancer. If you watch her video, you’ll understand what this courageous woman is facing and more importantly, how she is facing it.

Battling cancer is a long and VERY expensive journey, as well as an emotional roller coaster. Please consider donating what you can, and send your love. Keep this family in your prayers, and focus that positive energy toward the little town in Michigan, of Grand Rapids. Every contribution, large or small, will make a difference and help this “fighter” continue to take much needed breaths.
