Help Send Lora to Clarion West!
$2,000 of $1,800 goal
My name is Lora Gray and, this summer, I've been invited to attend Clarion West .
I am asking for your help to make this amazing journey possible!
WHAT IS CLARION WEST? Clarion West is an intensive 6 week writing program geared toward preparing promising writers for a professional career in speculative fiction. It takes place in Seattle, Washington and is taught by some of the most well respected writers and editors in the field.
Each year, 18 students from around the world are selected to attend.
It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm beyond honored to have been chosen!
SO...WHAT ABOUT YOU? I'm a native of Northeast Ohio where I currently live with my husband and my freakishly smart cat, Cecil. I work as a writer, freelance artist and dance instructor/choreographer.
I've been writing for, literally, as long as I can remember. My childhood was peppered with dragons and unicorns. My teenage years were full of fanfictions and would-be novels hammered out on an ancient word processor. I was a writing minor in college and my short fiction and poetry have appeared, or is forthcoming, in a handful of magazines and anthologies including Strange Horizons, Latchkey Tales Elementals: Wings of Air, Slipstream, Arsenic Lobster, Happy Literary Journal and Connections.
WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR? Tuition fees, travel expenses and food.
HOW SOON DO YOU NEED THE MONEY? Clarion West begins June 19th, 2016, so the goal is to raise the money before then.
SPECIAL THANK YOU REWARDS! Everyone who donates will get a personalized thank you email as well as updates here about the weeks leading up to the workshop.
I'm also offering special donation rewards at the $25, $50 and $100 levels, (which makes me feel a little like PBS...which is kind of awesome!)
$25 gets you a personal postcard from Seattle!
$50 gets you an art print of one of my original characters!
$100 gets you a signed, limited edition mini book of my poetry!
A FINAL NOTE. Attending Clarion West has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager. I appreciate each and every one of you and your love, help and support.
Your generosity means the world to me.
I can't believe Clarion West is almost here.
I'm 50% packed, (including the little notebook with the names and addresses of those of you who donated at the 'postcard level'...so excited about postcard shopping in Seattle!), and trying to remember all the little things about traveling solo that I feel like I've forgotten. Airport secrets, security lines and hailing cabs. I just realized the last time I traveled out of state Uber wasn't even a thing yet!
Next week promises to be insanely busy, so this will most likely be my last update here.
I wanted to say, one more time, thank you to everyone who has helped me with this. I really don't think I could have done this without your help. You really are amazing and I feel so honored and blessed to have your support.
Only a few more weeks until I leave for Seattle and I'm full of butterflies!
I'll be tech-ing a dance concert the week before I leave, (working long hours in dark theaters, costumes and lights and lots of stress), so I've already begun to pack. Suddenly Clarion West seems very real.
A part of me want to hop in a time machine and tell 16 year old Lora that this is actually, finally happening. I'm not sure they'd believe me, (16 year old Lora was pretty skeptical about time travel), but they'd still think going to Clarion West and living the dream was wicked cool!
In preparation, I've been devouring the instructors' novels and short fiction. Have you read N.K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season? It's beautiful. I've also been revving up my writing schedule so that my brain doesn't explode after my first week in Seattle.
I had so much fun packing/mailing the donation rewards last week! I'll be sending out prints and books and putting people on the postcard mailing list as long as this campaign is active, so if you know anyone who would like some goodies and/or wants to help out, please continue to spread the word. :)
I really can't say thank you enough to everyone who has helped out with this. Every single donation has warmed my heart and being able to breathe a sign of relief now that some of the financial stress of this trip has been lifted is pretty awesome!
Until next time!
Also, the mini poetry books have arrived!
I will be sending them and the prints out this weekend, so keep your eyes peeled if you donated over $50. You'll be getting fun things in the mail.
