My name is Becca and I am GAY.
I was late to come out and the journey hasn't been easy.
I am a mother, a daughter, a wife and the founder of LIVE EQUAL. A non-profit company started to serve the LGBTQI community. This is my story.
About a year ago, I changed careers after 20 years. I decided to become a Financial Advisor and see if I could help the many gay couples and people like me to plan for their retirement. At that time, there was no such thing as marriage equality and the road to gain those rights wasn't really even on the horizon.
So I set out to network and find my target market and what I stumbled across is WAY bigger than me.
It was a need. A HUGE need for the LGBTQI community to find many services they need without being treated odd or with discrimination.
Let me give you an example: I am looking for a OBGYN that is gay friendly so my wife and I can start trying to have a baby. How do I find that doctor that won't look at us crazy?
Here's another one: I am a transgender teenager, I need to tell my parents and then I would like to find a couselor and physician that can help me make the change. What kind of doctor do I look for and how can I get a counselor that will guide me through the process?
First let me tell you that I live in a VERY conservative state and when I went to GOOGLE to type in "gay friendly OBGYN and STATE" the results were weird. REAL weird. Nothing came up....no one in our state would even dare advertise that way for fear of the RED state back lash. Maybe you live in a liberal state...but if you do, count your blessings because I think that is rare.
What I discovered next was that the list of discreet services that the LGBTQI community needs goes ON AND ON AND ON.
So here is what we do. LIVE Equal will offer a free membership to the public and solicit services to place on a web site. Therefore, when community comes into LIVE EQUAL.net to search for a service or product, they know that the provider of said service has already been screened and interviewed to fit the mission of serving the LGBTQI community. Live Equal will make sure that the services are quality and the providers are worthy.
Why do I need $5k? Great question. I need to build an expandable web site that can grow with the need and a band width that people tell me I will need. (i don't know much about this but I have done my homework ((smile)) . In addition to that, I need to hire attorneys to file LOTS of non-profit paperwork and ensure everyone's safety from 'haters' .
If you think this might be a service that someone you know might be able to use...then please donate. We want gay/straight/transgender/ confused teenagers to have the resources they need.
I promise to be a good steward of your money and put back all you give to the foundation into serving others.
