Who hasn’t been affected by someone else’s drinking problem or other addiction?

Slammed with the overwhelmingly painful behaviors resulting from my son’s struggle with addiction changed me - for the better

I tell the stories in my book, Transforming to Joy; Responding to My Son’s Struggle with Addiction. Simply put, my thinking and being shifted from reacting with fear to responding with love.

I hit my bottom in 2009. The frustration and anger at my son for repeating destructive behaviors and at myself for not being able to control or cure him began to affect my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. I couldn’t go on the way I had been.

Transforming to Joy begins here, with the conscious choice I made to change. I am happy to share with you my story about my relationship with my son, Adam. Through this relationship, I have learned to live a more aware, truthful, appreciative, and loving life.

This moment in time especially needs stories that offer a hopeful path to women and men experiencing the pain of loving someone with an addiction. Just as importantly, it is for those seeking peace within any tumultuous circumstance. This book provides perspective, support, and practical tools for your journey.

"When he broke one of our agreed upon house rules, it came as quite a blow to me. The details of the error are irrelevant. What is relevant is the way we worked through it."

Hello Friends,

I offer you this candid reflection written by Lauren Beth Jacobs, an attorney and wellness/yoga teacher.
Do you know someone struggling with addiction?

If so, I highly recommend reading my dear friend, Lisa L. Frechette’s book Transforming to Joy; Responding to My Son’s Struggle With Addiction.

For a long time, I let my dad’s struggles with alcoholism and addiction to high-risk behavior (thought he probably wouldn’t have used that word — “struggle” — his behavior was definitely a struggle for me) dictate my mood and many aspects of my life.

Like Lisa, however, I found a way to tap into my creativity to help me start to figure out how to heal and eventually respond in a mindful and healthy way.

Years later, I find that when I revert back to old patterns of reacting with fear or sadness (for example, I find myself in a bad mood when someone else close to me is in one, and I can’t do anything to change their mood or actions), it is often because I have stopped the consistent mindful and creative practices (yoga, meditation, dance, writing, etc) that heal me and give me strength.

Lisa’s book reminds me to dig back into my toolbox, so I can respond and live more joyfully. Moreover, when I do that, it often times seems to help spark joy in those around me.
Win-win, right!?
