Layla's Wheelchair Van

Donation protected

We sincerely ask for you to consider giving towards the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van for the Luyt family. We have been on quite the journey the last two years with our daughter Layla. She has a very rare, still undiagnosed, genetic neuromuscular disease as well as a cortical visual impairment. In her short life, hospital and hospice stays are the norm. Layla is 100% g-tube fed, and attached to her feeding tube most of the day and night. She has extremely low muscle tone, and is unable to do anything for herself. Relying fully on her parents and caregivers. She is only getting bigger and it is getting harder for us to get her in and out of her carseat and into other seating equipment. Kaiti has unfortunately not been able to go back to work because of Layla’s extra needs and the abundance of doctors appointments and therapies. This has left some financial strain on our family. But we firmly believe that we want to put the most energy and efforts into Layla because she has so much potential.
In the last few months we have seen much more positive changes than we thought possible. The biggest surprise came to us when we put Layla in a power wheelchair for the first time. Both of us thought there was no way she would be able to control it. But she did do some movements right away and with very little prompting! It gives us hope for what her future may be. Now our goal is to get her out of the house and on the streets (so to speak). Currently, we are trapped in our home with the power chair and it is not enough space for her to use the chair for full mobility. Having an accessible van will be a step towards Layla's independence and help her interact with other children.
For those who would like to hear about some of the practicalities of the cost we have gotten a quote from http://sidewinderconversions.com/ out in Chilliwack, BC. For the base model Dodge Carivan with the rear entry it will cost about $46,000! (Yikes!) We have applied to the Variety Club as well as Presidents Choice and are hoping to get about half of the cost of the van from those charities. Unfortunately that still leaves a big chunk and so thank YOU for your help in making that number a little less scary.
It has been difficult for us to let go and allow others to come along side but have realized how necessary it is. In our case especially, it really does take a village to raise a child. We are so so incredibly thankful for any and all support we recieve and hope one day we can pay it forward. Thank you for your consideration.
