Our (ad)venture to empower WOC

It’s Kyra and Emii. Thank you for your interest we're glad you're here! We're super excited about what we've developed in preparation for the launch of our new company. As some of you may know, we've set out on a journey to build a company with purpose; one that centers the needs of women of color- not leave them to the outskirts of an afterthought. We’re looking to raise $6,500, not only to kick-start our business but more importantly help other women of color, just like us, to find their POWER.
A not-so-beautiful truth...
For a long time, people with afro-textured hair have been pressured to straighten it in order to be considered beautiful or “professional.” And if you’re someone with darker skin you're accustomed to the media messages prompting you to desire lighter skin to avoid judgment and be socially accepted.
Not only are there real social pressures, but once you decide to rock your curls it's hard to find what works and what's healthy for your hair needs. These women spend hundreds of dollars due to false advertising claims. They end up with a full tub of products that simply don’t work. A study found that 75% of products marketed to women of color are rated medium to high in hazardous ingredients. It shouldn’t be this damn difficult nor hazardous to love yourself naturally. Kyra's niece deserves better (the cute 'lil girl in the picture below), and we're equipped and ready to do our part to change this for good.
How we will use this fund...
By donating you’ll help us create a company that puts the well-being of women of color first. Our initial product will be an app where our users can become experts of their own hair, make informed purchase decisions and feel supported on their natural hair journey. Every dollar will go towards the development of our product (app) and some associated marketing costs. We’ll update contributors on our progress regularly through email, and if you can’t contribute but want to stay in tune please just email us.
Why we know this is a worthwhile (ad)venture…
Since we’re spending lots of time and money, we want to be absolutely certain that this is NOT a crazy idea, so we did our research. We spent over 150 hours on the phone, coffee meetups, having real conversations with over 100 women. And one thing has been true all across the board >> we need to do hair differently in society and the industry.
We also designed a mockup (non-functioning version) of our app to solve all of these problems and showed it to potential users. And their response was that this is the answer to their prayers (and no, we’re not exaggerating). From this, we launched the initial stage of our product and now have active clients. I know right!?
What we know...
There are 8 million other women out there who would benefit from this service, and we’re dedicated to working our A$$ off to get it to them. Having come from low-income backgrounds, we understand if you’re unable to donate. Plus there’s a lot of great causes out there, so if we’re lucky enough to receive anything at all we’ll be grateful. But if not, sharing our page is equally appreciated.
