Khan has a heart problem and was admitted to emergency care early on Sunday morning, February 10, for trouble breathing and the initial stages of heart failure. The doctors said he can still be with us another year if given proper treatment. A lot is unknown at the moment, but we need immediate help because vet bills for his initial treatment cost nearly $2,400.00 and he still needs additional examinations, tests, check-ups, a prescription diet, continuing care, and lots of medications. When I visited him at the vet on February 10 and 11, as they were giving him oxygen (pictured below), he got up and I petted him. Now that we have our boy back home, we’re so grateful to be back to going for our walks and enjoying lots of snuggle time. It is clear to me that if given proper treatment he can still enjoy so much and continue bringing so much happiness and love into our lives.

Khan was attacked by a big dog last year, but he’s strong and a real trooper who loves to play tug, sleep in the laundry basket, and get lots of back rubs and time in his daddy’s lap.

Words can’t express what Khan means to my family and I. I’ve had so many losses and traumas in my life and he’s always been there for me. He’s one of the few family members I have left. He was there for me through losing my mother to cancer and when I had to cope with losing my father. He’s also been there for me through my step-father’s cancer and has been a source of love and support as I try to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I could not have made it through college or have done so much of my advocacy work for social justice without him. He helps me deal with my flashbacks, anxiety, and depression and so much more. He’s been a wonderful source of unconditional love and friendship to our family for years. I truly cannot imagine my life without him.

I wanted to let everyone know that Khan is getting better. I just went to see him a little while ago and the doctors said that Khan was eating and drinking more. He also wagged his tail for me when I petted him. The picture below is from when I saw him this morning. The doctors said he's going to need some additional new medications and he is going to need a lot of ongoing care, but the doctor is hopeful that we might be able to bring him home tonight. We barely slept because we've been doing everything we can to get Khan the help he needs. We're not out of the woods, but but I'm thrilled that we might be able to bring him back home tonight. Thanks so much for the amazing support and help everyone! I will continue giving updates as we're able. Please continue helping in any way you can. Sharing the link to Khan's page over email, text, and social media has itself proven to be a huge help. Thank you!

The warm support and generosity everyone has shown means the world to us and is appreciated more than I can put into words. It really is overwhelming and gives us hope. I'll be going back to check on Khan tomorrow morning and will let everyone know how he is doing. Please continue helping us get the word out and share the link to his page in every way possible. You can call people, send emails and text messages, post across social media... Every pair of eyes we can get to Khan's fundraiser brings him that much closer to getting the treatment he needs and that much closer to bringing my boy back home. Thank you so much for your help and everything you do!

With our deepest love and appreciation,

DaShanne and the rest of Khan's family
