Last spring our dear friend Jamie Showkeir received the nightmare diagnosis of ALS. Unfortunately this terrible disease progressed rapidly. By July, Jamie needed the support of a cane. By October his legs no longer supported him.

Today Jamie has only 20% use of his arms, cannot feed himself, and uses a wheelchair for mobility. In addition, he needs total assistance getting in and out of the chair as well as with other tasks of daily living.

Throughout all this, our dear friend remains a bright, loving, generous man, who is mentally sound and engaged in life. He is teaching us about the true meaning of authenticity, presence and courage.

How you can help Jamie

Health insurance helps with medical needs, but NOT with in-home care.  Jamie is too large for his wife, Maren, to lift. He has reached the point where he needs professional caregivers to:
➤ Get him out of bed, shower, shave, and dress him in the morning.
➤ Provide toiletry and other personal care, and move him during the day.
➤ Undress and prepare him for bed.
➤ Reposition him when he awakes at night.

Professional in-home care will cost Jamie and Maren over $10,000 a month for 16 hours a day .

Our goal is to raise $60,000 for in-home care for six months - so Jamie gets the help he needs now, and so Jamie and Maren can be reassured  as they plan for the future.
     ➤ $2240 will pay for a week of in-home care (16 hours a day).
➤ $320 will pay for one day.

You can make a one-time donation or pay monthly.

Every contribution will make a difference. Please join us and together we can make this happen!

Thank you!

For those who have not heard, I'm sad to tell you that Jamie died on the morning of Aug. 16, his 63rd birthday. The details can be found on our CaringBridge site: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jamieshowkeir

As you will read, he got his wish to die at home. He died in my arms, peacefully and surrounded by love.

Thanks to your donations, Jamie was cared for lovingly by trained CNAs and other support people. I hope we someday live in a country where people don't have to stage fundraisers to get the high-quality compassionate care they need when they're dying. In the meantime, your donations were vital in helping us afford the medical assistance that was so vital to keeping him comfortable at home.

Jamie was a light in the world, and continues to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Going on without him seems as hard as watching him suffer the indignities of ALS. But I know it's a process, and the love and support I am receiving gives me strength.

I am in awe of ALL the love and support and assistance that has been directed our way in the wake of Jamie's ALS diagnosis. Words will never adequately express our gratitude for your generosity, but I hope you can feel it in your hearts. Bless you all.

Love,
Maren

We want to again thank everyone — so many generous, wonderful people — who make it possible for Jamie to live his last days where he wants to be. He needs full-time care now, and having the ability to provide it in our home means the world to us. Your love has lifted us up, along with our gratitude for this time together.

Jamie entered hospice in late April, much sooner than either of us expected. For those of you who have not found it, I've been posting updates about Jamie's condition at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jamieshowkeir
Jamie is so grateful to be at home.

What an outpouring of generosity and love! We passed $60,000 in only one week.

LET'S KEEP GOING!
We've raised enough for 16 hours a day, but Jamie needs 24-hour care.

Jamie and Maren are drinking from a firehose of gratitude.
