Keep Santa Fe Beautiful's Garden Campaign

Tax deductible
Keep Santa Fe Beautiful’s roots began in 2003.  Several community members came together with an ambitious idea to create an organization dedicated to improving the environment, aesthetic, and quality of life in Santa Fe, Texas.

However, a new story began in 2018.

Many in our community were still trying to recover from Hurricane Harvey, a catastrophic natural disaster that hit our area when a most horrendous tragedy occurred.  On May 18, 2018, an armed student entered Santa Fe High School.  We lost 10 lives that day; 13 others were injured by gunshots.  Several students hid, surviving, but those next to them did not.  Hundreds of students and staff members ran from the building, all witnessing things they will never forget.  Nearly 1,400 students, almost 100 staff members, and thousands of parents, guardians, and family members learned the true meaning of fear, heartbreak, and horror that day.

Our small community was forever changed.

In June, a Santa Fe alumni, resident, and mother of two Santa Fe High School teenagers, approached the City of Santa Fe with an idea to redevelop an underutilized city park into a serene and restorative therapeutic garden to help the community of Santa Fe begin to heal.

By August, this community member and the City of Santa Fe had developed a plan to revitalize Keep Santa Fe Beautiful to oversee the project.  The proposal sparked interest from others including another Santa Fe alumni, who is a co-founder of an award-winning landscape architecture firm in Houston.  The idea transformed into the design of the Mae S. Bruce: Therapeutic Garden.

The park includes a sensory garden, walking trail, meditative areas, a water feature, artful mosaics, community seating, an open lawn next to a gazebo, and enclosed on two sides with a 7-foot fence.  The garden is explicitly designed for those dealing with PTSD.  Its nature-based healing approach will help those impacted in May 2018, as well as assist veterans who make-up almost 10% of the population of the City of Santa Fe.  Also, everyone from the Santa Fe community and surrounding areas will benefit from the new serene space.

This garden project will have a lasting impact on the community of Santa Fe and significantly change the world of PTSD healing for generations to come.  Any and all additional funds raised in excess of the campaign goal will support the operations of Keep Santa Fe Beautiful and future programs and projects.  Soon including; a weekly evidence-based nature therapy program at the garden, in partnership with the Santa Fe Strong Resiliency Center, to further utilize the garden’s beneficial abilities.

We hope that you will consider supporting our efforts, as our journey to help our community heal happens only with generous and compassionate people like you.

Sincerely,

Keep Santa Fe Beautiful
