Hello. My name is Judy.
I was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease back in 1999, I have actually been having symptoms as far back as 1987.
Meniere's Disease is a rare disorder of the inner ear that affects balance and hearing. Over the last 28 years, the Menieres has progressed to the point where it has permanently damaged the portion of my inner ear that controls my balance. I have trouble walking a straight line and I have bouts of vertigo that cause me to fall multiple times a day, causing minor injuries to me on a regular basis. On my bad days, I can't even get up off of the floor due to the vertigo.
In the hopes of helping me to safely navigate my days, my doctor has recommended the use of a service dog specially trained in balance assistance.
We checked, and medical insurance doesn't help cover any of the expenses for a service dog, even though the dog is prescribed by a doctor. The costs of the dog, the training, all of the usual dog-accessories, as well as all of the service gear necessary (including a specially fitted balance harness needed to custom fit both me and the dog), and all of the veterinary costs add up to more than we can cover ourselves.
My life would be completely changed with a service dog, and I would greatly appreciate any support to help.
