A Reading Program for Josiah

Donation protected
Josiah is a very bright 9 year old who has been home schooled since he was in preschool. He loves the sciences, math, and art and has really excelled in them. But even though we started a phonics program when he was in Kindergarten he still struggles with reading. This year I started to teach his sister, Grace, the same phonics program. She is speeding through it very easily and is soon going to pass him up in just one year; the very same program that has taken Josiah 3 years to get through. That is when I began to realize how much Josiah is really struggling. I began to look at the symptoms and saw that he really does have pretty significant dyslexia . I began reading up on dyslexia and how to overcome it. Here is a simple video that describes dyslexia, and why a very bright child can have  so much trouble reading.

As I have been researching how to help Josiah overcome the dyslexia I have found the Orton-Gillingham method to be the very best aproach. It is a multisesory reading aproach that helps a child with dyslexia organize information in the brain as well as give them tools to decode the words so they are not so overwhelmed by a page of words and can systematicly break words apart and read or spell anything. It is well researched and proven to help the most difficult dyslexic student learn to read with confidence.

There are several programs out there that apply the Orton-Gillingham aproach but they are all very expensive. The best Orton-Gillingham program that I have found thus far is the Barton Reading System. It has 10 levels. The studant must start at the beginning to get the foundation no matter what grade. Here is a link to the web site. There is also a demo video of how the program works. https://bartonreading.com/. This program will cost about $3,000 to get the complete program. We can get started with the program as soon as we raise enough to buy the first 2 levels which would cost about $500.

I am confident that this is going to be a very good investment for us; for Josiah to really become proficient in reading but also his little sister that was born to us this last year. Little Naomi was born with Down Syndrome and will have special learning needs along the way. I believe that while the program may not meet all her needs, the principles I learn in teaching this program to Josiah will also help me teach Naomi when the time comes.

Thank you for investing in the educational needs of our very special children.
