Jonathan's wheelchair van & aide

Our nephew, Jonathan, has Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, which is a progressive degenerative muscle disease that causes loss of muscle mass at first in the legs and then in the arms, neck, heart and lungs. At age 14, this disease has progressed so far that Jonathan is confined to a wheel chair and in need of 24-7 medical supervision.
Our sister, Sara, is a hard-working single mom, taking care of 4-kids (ages 6-14) on her own. She is unable to afford a handicap van with a wheelchair lift and is unable to lift our 90lb nephew in and out of a regular car. In addition, she has recently found herself in a position where she is unable to work outside of the home because Jonathan needs assistance 100% of the time. The cost of a nurse aide to come into the home to care for Jonathan while she is at work is cost prohibitive. Because of these financial and physical challenges, this family (including the 4 small children!) is about to lose their home! Sadly, there is very little government aid to help families in this situation (trust me – we’ve tried!!!).
We are in a tough spot with family members on the brink of homelessness because a single mom can’t afford the necessary equipment and care for her special needs son. We started this GoFundMe site to try to raise money for a wheelchair accessible van with a power lift ($25K), and an in-home aide to watch Jonathan for 1-year ($350/week; $18K/yr) ) so that Sara can work to support the family.
